So, I've been working on developing a pattern for a CPK folder.

One pattern has already been pretty thoroughly developed on paper, and I won't be showing it off yet, but it struck me that the EDC might provide a good platform for a folder, so...

Good freakin lord yes. Any early notions about deployment and frame/grip? I'd kill for a cpk flipper along the lines of the lionsteel kur, but maybe with a monobloc g10 or micarta handle/frame like the lionsteel tm1 - but with your flare for blade design and handling, and Nathan's machining wizardry.

And delta 3V :)

I might forego an EDC and wait for one of these if this was to become a reality!

... maybe not, but holy cow!

Regardless I will be taking one.

I just recently received my first EDC. Now that I finally have one in hand, and doubt it would make a good platform for a folder as far as the handle goes. Way too thick. Part of the awesomeness of it is that girth. Not sure it would translate into something flat and thin well.

Unless we are talking blade profile only. Doubt the finger guard would remain the same if you plan to do a flipper, but I very much like the blade profile, the belly is awesome and the tip is outstanding as well. Has the really nice spine detail from the FK and a usable little thumb ramp.

So I guess I am saying I am not sure how well it would translate into a folder but it's not a bad idea to look at. You know how changing one thing can alter everything else.

There will be a folder, but it is potentially years away. Go for an EDC, you won't be disappointed.

I will certainly be getting at least 1-2 more.

take the handle slabs off and get back to me ;)

nowhere close to working out those kinds of deets yet

I would very much like to hear from you folks what you like in a folder, or what you'd like to see in a CPK folder, however...

Main attributes.

Smooth action. No blade play, lock stick or anything poorly aligned. Centered blade.

Good handle to length ratio but not at the cost of poor ergonomics. Needs to be grippy enough to be safely operated during a wide varieties of tasks in cold or wet conditions but not so abrasive as to damage clothing during carry.

Stock thin enough to cut and slice with. No need for folding pry bar.

Prefer a stainless steel that is practical for use on food. I use my EDC during lunch to cut fruit and meat etc. A semi-stainless is OK as well. It needs to be able to be carried bare in a pocket in the sweaty summer and not corrode.

Steel that is properly heat treated. Needs good edge retention. I don't want to reach down for my EDC and elect not to use it then go find another knife regularly.

Nothing too heavy if possible, and a pocket clip that fits the hand properly without hot spots or digging in when gripped as intended.

I've used my current EDC (Sebenza 25 w/ micarta inlay) for opening boxes. Opening a plastic bag. Stripping copper wire, slightly enlarging a hole in drywall. Prying a loose knot out of a board that was proud. Trimming a burr off a piece of copper pipe, cutting pex, scraping a drop of dried paint off concrete. Taking the burr off about 10 cut 2x4s, and deburing holes drilled in 60 year old 2x4s. Cutting a metal sliver out of my hand and scraping a price tag off a piece of wood. This was all in the past 48 hours.

I would like a knife that can do all that and still be reasonably sharp.

There is more if I could find all this, but I figure this is a great starting point.

I'm definitely more of a fixed blade guy than folder so I don't have much to contribute here but i'm sure the design will be unbelievable and can't wait to see what you come up with!!

That's funny to read. I am definitely more of a folder guy than a fixed blade guy as I carry a folder all day every day even around the house.

However I cannot find the right folder for the life of me. So almost every folder I buy I end up selling. Yet I spend most of my time on a fixed blade forum. Almost all my knives are fixed blade and almost all from Nathan.

How does that make any sense?

If you can make it somewhat ambidextrous, I'd be stoked!
Flippers are great. Knives with easily accessible thumb studs or thumb holes are cool too.

You are knife-fluid lol

I just prefer to carry a good old slab of steel instead of a dingy folder, event the overbuilt ones can't match the strength of a fixed blade and they are really expensive for what they are capable of doing too.

For me something I can fit in my pocket, don't need to take off to get in a vehicle, and is not really noticeable by people who don't know about knives is key. I work in an area the average house price is well into the seven figures and need prevent standing out.

When I am out and about on my daily adventures, my knife is not supposed to be seen.

Also, the proper execution of the mechanism is a far higher achievement of design and creation than your standard fixed blade.

Add that to my list!

Would the folder be full flat or hollow ground? Glad to hear that the folder won't we a pocket brick.

Justin's description is spot-on.
Folders are for convenience with utility. It is easier/more convenient/less conspicuous to carry a 3 or 4" blade if it is not attached to a 4-5" handle that does not fold. I like fixed blades but am much more likely to carry a folder at all times than a fixed blade.
Having said that, it still needs to be a safe and reliable solution to whatever job you want that knife for. It also needs to be safe and efficient to deploy and put away, stay open 100% reliable when in use, and closed 100% reliable when not in use.
The thing is, there are a LOT of great folders available these days in a wide variety of steels and at a wide variety of price points.
Anything CPK does will be eagerly anticipated and highly sought after but what will make it stand out? Almost certainly the quality of manufacturing, including the grind and heat treat in a desirable steel (delta 3V!). Most of my folders are spydercos because I like the quality, steel options, thumbhole opening (fwiw I think flippers are highly overrated as a safe and controllable opening mechanism), lockup, handle ergos, etc. I mention those only to ask, what will be the features that will make someone want to carry (and not just own to own) a CPK folder over a purchaser's current favorite folders? Same things as why we want CPK fixed blades when we already have other fixed blades. What are your "things?"

I don't necessarily agree that a folder has to be everything that a fixed blade can be, just in a folding package. I think folders serve their own purposes and inherent limitations are a given. Let's compare it to other faders, not to fixed blades.
I just picked up my first spyderco, and I'm starting to like their thumb hole. It offers a couple ways to open it one handed, but I'm not proficient with it yet. I have carried a flipper CRKT (hey, don't judge), and I can open the that thing lightning quick, as quick as I can clear my pocket. If Nathan offered a flipper, I'd be drooling over it, I'm sure. But, my first thought wouldn't be to put it up against one of his fixed blades. I'd evaluate it as a folder.
