CPK Folder

First off I would like to say that after having had a couple of weeks to use my EDC, I absolutely love it. When I first saw pictures of it I wasn't sure about the handle shape but after using it I've found it to be as close to perfect for me as any knife I have ever owned!! I've used it for a multitude of tasks ranging from my daily food prep for my lunch ie)cutting cheese ,meat, veggies etc, to cutting boxes and such at work and it excels at all of the tasks I have had for it. The balance of the knife makes it want to just "hug" or be "cradled" in your hand. not sure how to explain it but for me it was love at first grip. Congratulations Lorien for an amazing design and Nathan for your impeccable skills at bringing this knife to life !!

As for a folder, I will be a buyer as long as it isn't a tanto or a re-curve, but the one design element that I would like to see is a "wave" type opener. I know some people don't like this design but I don't understand why,( unless they haven't figured out how to use it ), I don't see any way to deploy a folder from your pocket faster. I just don't think it is possible as the knife is opened the instant it leaves your pocket. Keep up the great work and I am anxiously awaiting the arrival of the Survival Knife as well as the future Folder.

I'm curious as to what sort of locking mechanism you have in mind for this one, frame lock , back lock, etc. Maybe something new and top secret? I mostly carry Sebenzas and Hinderers on rotation. As for the CPK folder, I think something with large thumb studs would be a plus for easy opening, I'd like a folder with micarta slabs on a titanium or steel frame.

The reason I much prefer flippers is that they're less prone to deploying accidentally, as compared to waves, and they require a separate discreet, deliberate action, rather than combining the pocket-draw with the open. In a tactical situation, with gloves on, etc, I can see how a wave might be useful, but to me, for general and EDC use, the benefit of a flipper is that it combines the fast open (you can deploy it more or less as quickly as a wave), with the ability to draw the knife first, and then — at whatever subsequent point you want — open the knife rapidly.

Also, a good flipper absolves the knife from having studs or holes on the blade. A wave, which still needs a secondary opening mechanism, winds up festooned with a stud or hole or disc. Flippers simplify the knife where it counts.

With most waved knives I've handled, it's only fast to deploy the blade IF you're doing that at the pocket, but if the knife is already out, unopened, the blade deployment is slower and more cumbersome than a good flipper.

Please no wave.

Oh I see how it is, looks like wave discrimination to me.lol
If you don't want it to deploy, you just have to turn the knife slightly towards you when you relieve your pocket of it. I have a waved Combat Karambit that I have used as a work knife for the last 8 years or so and it has been deployed thousands of times over that period and I find it very useful. That being said I also have several ZT flippers that I carry on a rotating schedule and enjoy them as well. So wave, flipper, non flipper I really don't care either way, if you make it they will come.

I do think waves are cool, don't get me wrong. Just not what I'd want on an EDC, mostly since it'll wind up needing thumb studs, or a hole, or a disc, and that can be an impediment (at least studs or a disc) to some kinds of cutting.

Either way though — I'm in :) Just stating a preference.

On-balance, my least favourite deployment method, the thumb disc, does have the advantage of giving a wider platform to apply pressure with the thumb. Always tradeoffs.

snag opening is a feature distinct to Emerson and now Zero Tolerance, just as hole opener, (sounds wrong to me) is distinct to Spyderco. We won't be borrowing/stealing features such as this. A Reeve lock, on the other hand, is so ubiquitous that I think it's ok to use, and that's Nate's preference so that's where we'll be going with this

Nathan's preference is the Reeves integral huh. I guess that is consistent with his time spent with a Mnandi.

I believe Lorien prefers a liner lock.

Hmmmmm, wonder what the general consensus is on the lock interface material between you two...

Might just be ceramic hmmmmmm....

I'm sure it will be exemplary or neither would out their name on it....I'm hoping on maybe bribing Lorien or Nathan into getting a Proto. :D

Either RIL or liner if done well (and it will be by these gentlemen) will be great.
One design consideration Lorien - please make it so it can be opened by gloved hands! That way it can be a year-round tool :) ... should I be lucky enough to snare one. I still have not been so lucky with an EDC, but one of these days...

I think a CPK folder with a 3 1/2 - 5" blade, in Delta 3V or 4V would be just awesome!
I like flippers, but a good thumb-stud opener would be fine too as long as the stud isn't set to far away from the handle.

I'm in for at least one!

While not opposed to a D3V steel selection I am not 100% certain it would do well in the summer pocket environment.

Justin,

well, of course I can, though it continues to be under development and not expected to be operational until mid 2017. Internals only here, except for the sections that are classified.:D

As you can see, it's the ne w and very controversial Pfeiffer shuttle piston system which includes the auxiliary pump assist linkage with what has been described as parallel footing. A redundancy has been built into the rear portion of the mechanism in case the auxiliary pump assist linkage loses forward distance thrust of even as little as 1mm , and activated when forward momentum is reduced by only 2% or more.

The side venting system at the front is treated with clear tritium (think white dot gunsites) to allow the air about to pass through it a more visible pathway, exiting the vents on the top hump and bottom end:

I thought I had posted this before, so sorry if it's a repeat.
