my fam lives in hawaii and my brother is getting his eagle scout so i want to make him a gift. he will most likley take it in the water when diving. will cpm 154 handle salt water.

Cpm 154 will hold up pretty well in salt water. Maybe not quite as good as 440c, and certainly not as good as the 420 series, but the extra performance is well worth it. If you brother will simply wash off the salt water and keep it clean when not in use, it'll hold up marvelously. Add a little light oil for insurance and he'll never have a problem.

for only a bit of salt water use the cpm 154 will be great because it will hold and edge a lot better then the other softer steels like 440c or 420....although 440c isnt bad itself it he does a lot of diving...

154CM has better corrosion resistance than 440C. If your brother is always prying open treasure chests, you might consider CPM154 - which is twice as tough.
