Does anyone have experience with cpm-154cm,cpm-3v,or cpm m4? If you do
how do they stack up in your opinion. Thanks!

I have experience with 154CM. As you probably know, it is essentially the same alloy as ATS34 from Hitachi. For both these steels, edge holding is far superior to 440C and both toughness and stain resistance are also very good. Many knife makers, myself included, consider them the best value for the money in Stainless steels. IMHO, the Crucible product (154CM) is superior because ATS34 often has inclusions that are a real pain by the time you get to fine enough grits that they show up. Price on both these is excellent, with the 154CM worth the small extra premium.

I've just ordered some CPM3V because the specs look more like science fiction than fact. A number of excellent knife makers swear by it. (Has anyone ever heard back from Ed Schott?) The stuff is more expensive than lobster.

Can't comment on the M4

i started working with 3V and like it i havent realy done and edge holding tests yet
i can tell you this you can beat the hell out of it and not hurt it
i havent had a rust problem yet but i havent let it sit out to see
so far as price wow you dont want to mess up last bar i got was a piece 5/32x1.5x22 inch and was right around 50$
i think it grinds nice
you need a kiln to heat treat it or send it out
i havent had a hole lot of luck buffing it out all
the vanadium sucks the buffer can pull the vanadium carbides off the steel and drag them over your nice finish :grumpy:
dont know if this helps any or not
and sorry i have not worked with the 154 cpm or the m4

Aldo, I thought you were just into forging and not stock removal????????? You Guys from Jersey???? :D :D

Thanks! I am new here and to knifemaking but I've been workong with a local maker and he has been great really helped me alot.

Back to the point I have ground 4 blades so far all out of D2 but I've been looking at other steels and all of these look good on paper. I am really wanting to try the M4 to me it seems to have the best combo of hardness 62 , toughness 32 , and wear resistance 20-25.
3V is something like 60 , 70 , 7 .
or 62, 40 , 8 .

D2 is something like 60 , 21 , 3-4.

AT 62HRC M4 is almost as tough as 3V at 62 with 3 times the wear resistance.

I've got a bar of each of these 154 3v m4 d2. I just started with the D2 first.I hope to grind the cpm-154 next then 3v then m4. when I get some finished I'll post my opinion. THANKS AGAIN AND ANY MORE INFO WILL BE GREATLY APRICIATED.
