how hard is it to heat treat and at what tempreture do i go too? i have looked it up but didnt understand what i found sorry if this is a stupid question

To heat treat cpm154 successfully you need a kiln. I do the following.
take to 1250 deg hold for 15 min.
take to 1650 deg and hold for 15 min.
take to 1950 deg and hold for 40 min.
Plate quench and into cryo for 6 hours then temper at 400 deg for 2 hours twice.

I've found that cryo helps but is not essential with cpm 154.Ido it because I use d2 and 440-c some also and it is necessary with those two.

Thanks a bunch. I am not sure about what is involved with cryo but I am sure it is not a cheap process and the funds are running low.

I use the above HT info and no cryo. Edge holding is exceptional with this steel.

Simple cryo requires some dry ice and something to put it in. Many people dissolve the dry ice in one of acetone, alcohol or kerosene; others just put the blade(s) between slabs of dry ice. Definitely bring the blade to room temperature before putting it in the dry ice.

This is more expensive and more hassle than liquid nitrogen if you cryo a lot, but much cheaper for occasional use.

I have been working with CPM 154CM since the first batch came out and love it. My recipe is as follows:

1950 for 30 minutes, forced air quench under a strong fan. That leaves me at about 63 Rc. I then temper three times at 375 degrees/2 hours. I end up between 60-61...most of the times I end up at 61 Rc.

From what the guru's have told me, a third temper really makes the difference...don't stop at a second. I just follow their instructions and have not had a problem yet.

Good luck!

hahaha thank you everyone i didnt realize it was kinda complex but im exited for this challange i think i shall try it with cryo first then with out thank you so much everyone
