Since new year I have carried a 3" FB on my belt everyday. With the heat and humidity this summer, keeping up with rust has been a challenge. When rust forms, it pits quickly, and deep. Is this normal for this steel? I know pitting is normal for 3v, but 30v is nearly double on it's chromium content.

Where you live has lots to do with how quickly rust forms. A thin coat of some sort of oil usually helps. What have you been cutting into?

When you cut things [acid fruit etc] do you at least rinse it off ? Other than that improper HT might do it.

As mete mentioned, a bad heat soak can mess things up somewhat. Other factors are bead blasted blade finishes, exposure to environmental contaminates (chemicals) or repeated exposure to non-stainless steel particles which are allowed to sit on the blade.

Any number of oils (synthetic works well), dry silicone, Tuf Cloth, etc. will work well as a thin coat. If you will be cutting food, mineral oil and Fluid Film are both food safe, if you have such a concern.

I've never had a problem with rust but at the same time I've always taken very good care of my blades. I've also only had S30V rust on me after leaving food on the blade for over a week but even then it was only a small spot and came off with a little compound.

Not taking proper care of your tools is easier than you think and some of what's happening could be related to your own body.

Your body oil and sweat can be much different than others, my brother for example can turn green micarta black in one use. I also recently gifted him a ZT 0350 CB and 4 days latter he had rust spots near his thumb stud.

In compairson it would take me a month to discolor micarta the way he does in a few hours.

Taking simple steps though, like wiping down your blade after each use even if it means wiping on your pants leg or with a little water and a rag will be a great help in keeping your blade free of rust. A light wipe of oil wouldn't hurt either.

Try taking that extra step in care and look for other factors as you begin to reduce the possibility of common issues.

Are you wearing a leather sheath or a kydex sheath? Leather can absorb moisture and can contribute to the moisture contact with your blade.

Simply put for mere mortals, stainless does NOT equal rust proof. No matter who says what!

Think about it.

i've had the same problem while keeping a knife in my pocket, behind the appron (right word?) in the kitchen. i've had s30v, 13c26, 440c etc rust. now i clip my knife either on the sleeves' pen pocket outside of it, iwb on my appron or on my kitchen shirt, where you close it, i mean i don't know the word but at the edge of the canvas where there are the buttons . is that called "lapel of shirt", reverso translator says so.

:D still have to improve my english

hardly ever do i find rust on any of my blades, even the 1095 i like so much. living in texas we certainly have extreme heat & humidity at times is increadible.as knifenut mentioned keeping your blades wiped is a good start. after using i wipe my knife on my pants leg & this seems to be a good practice. if the blade is sticky or muddy i spit on blade & rub lightly to loosen the sticky then wipe on my pants leg. i have done this so many years that it's automatic. as a carpet cleaner my knives are exposed to very active chemicals at times but the wiping practice seems to suffice. dennis

like others said it depends on people chemistery, i'm a cook and only use carbon steel japanese blades to cook. never had rusting issues patina, a lot rust, no. i have good habits about it etc.
but keeping any blade in my pocket when i'm sweating make it rust no matter how much i keep it clean and dry after use.

I have had light rust issues on many a S30V knife. It normally occurs when I am hiking or camping and even though I wipe the knives off if I sweat many times right through to the pockets they stay damp and small rust pitting occurs. I never seem to have this issue with 154cm or VG-10 etc.

Wow, I'm surprised to hear about rust on CPM S30V.

I have two S30V fixed blades (a belt knife and a bigger camp knife), both see a lot of duty.

The belt knife is my choice for summer's sweat season, and the leather sheath does get wet with sweat.

The camp knife sees lots of food prep, and is often left to fester with a dirty blade overnight.

The blades don't get pampered, just a wipe dow or wash and dry after use, no oil other protectant used.

I can't say I have had any problem with rust or corrosion.

S30V eye candy!

Stainless means "stains less", not "Stain Free". There are only a couple of steels out there that claim to be truly non-staining - H1 being the most predominant. Titantium won't rust, but is difficult to harden enough for knife blades.

I do know from some sources that during their financial troubles over the last couple of years, Crucible had some consistency issues with S30V. Should be better now.

It is carried in a kydex shealth. It is carried 12 hours a day on Ft bragg, NC. I clean it frequently, and have not gone more than four days without checking it. The primary use is to cut rope, 550, and plastic seal tags. If used on food, it is cleaned immediately afterwards. I have owned and used knives since the mid sixties.

If you want a knife that's not going to rust period I recommend a titanium blade, there are even some ceramic folders out there! Check out this site the first company to produce these titanium blades is based in the town where I live now xD! I think it's called creative edge, I have a friend that works there cutting insanely beautiful marble floor art.
