Hi again,

I ordered a custom Bushcraft knife and have to choose one of those steel.

What would you guys go for?

CPM 3V = tough + hard to sharpen+ cant be used with fir steels
A2=Nice , I have a knife in this steel. The knife I am ordering comes with a
3mm blade thickness. Is This steel sufficient?

O1= Have no clue about it.

I have a knife in 3V and have no trouble with a firesteel. I do not find it much harder to sharpen than 01.

I like 3V and A2.. They are much more forgiving when it comes to corrosion.. O1 rusts just looking at it with moist eyes. 3V is going to be by a pretty good margin the toughest of the lot. Just my .02

FYI...3V can be used with feroocium fire steels. It can't be used with natural flint. It's carbon steel, just a little to hard for natural flint to create a spark.

In fact the Koster Bushcraft knife in 3V threw sparks from here to China when I used it.

lol
well thats good.
Its gonna be 12 months b4 I got it. Its a skookumbushtool.

You're gonna love it. Congrats. Rod makes the spine square and sharp, so you'll be welding with the sparks coming off your fire steel. ;)

I would have said O1 but any of the 3 choices are good. Can't go wrong with any of them.

3V is a high performance carbon steel with incredible abrasion resistance, and toughness. Its not stainless but wont rust much unless you really neglect it.
S30V is a stainless steel that is on par with A2 as far as strength.
3V is considerably tougher than both.

There seems to be this ongoing confusion about what works with fire steels. Just about any hard, sharp surface will work including stones and probably glass, although I haven't tried it. Anybody out there have a broken piece of glass he can try and then report back?

The sparks are produced from the firesteel, not from the striker.

That would be an affirmative on the glass .vs. ferrocerium rod. It will indeed produce sparks. Looks like I'm too late to chime in on the steel choice. I think ya made a good call with 3V though.

I have a knife or 2 in each steel, and I gotta say I like O1 the best out of all. I live in a very dry area, desert in fact, so the rust issue has not cropped up. A2 is very nice, especially in Barkies...
