CPM-3V - where to get it?

Mete, I just recently really looked close at the Crucible data sheet for 3V. It is unique in that this is the only sheet for any steel I remember seeing so far that specifies three temper sessions. Interesting. Is this because the chemistry allows for so much newly formed untempered martensite?

I was curious about that too ! The high temperatures are there for the secondary hardening , of course. I wonder if they just found that it improves toughness since they are selling it as a tough steel close to S7.

How will this steel perform in a 90 degree bend test? Anybody know?

Mete, yeah - that idea of yours had not occured to me. Perhaps you are onto it. The high tempering temperature is akin to that of BG-42 but without the BG-42 sharp up and down tempering hardness curve. One thing is for sure, I think anyhow, is that you don't have to worry about loss of corrosion resistance at the high tempering since the high chromium content is not there. (but- am I right in that assumption?)

Dan, I wonder about that too but would guess not quite. It, I think, would come closer to that than not though. I have never seen the stuff but have a sneeking suspicion it is only a matter of time. Trouble is it seems the only source we know of is Crucible. It may take a team effort to aquire it at a knife maker's budget. Forget about Admiral. I have already asked Terry Summers about it.

Crucible is interested in ALL size orders for knife blade steels, whether large orders from production cutlery companies or small orders from the custom knife maker.
It is the custom knife maker that often drives the cutlery business forward especially in the area of new cutlery grades and we at Crucible realize this and do our best to support the custom knifemaker.

If we have given you the impression that we do not want the small custom orders you have my apologies and we would like an opportunity to redeem ourselves. You can call Bruce DiVita or Scott Devanna @ 800-365-1168 and we will do our best to assist you. If we are not readily available our other inside sales people are ready and willing to assist you.

CPM 3V is an excellent cutlery grade, its only shortcoming being it is not a true stainless grade. However, as many custom makers have informed us, CPM3V does exhibit resistance to staining and corrosion but it is a safer bet to use a little more care - clean blade and apply a protective coating - after using a CPM3V blade.

CPM 3V has taken a back seat to some of our other CPM and stainless cutlery grades but we still do inventory and sell CPM 3V. Because our sales of CPM 3V are not as robust as we would like we have not replenished inventories at the same pace as other cutlery grades. If you gentlemen want more we will put more in stock ! If our prices seem out of line let me know and we will make corrections where necessary. If you have heat treat questions, call us and we will help with answers and technical data.

We do appreciate your business - thank you and please call us with any questions or requirements you may have.

Your response here in this forum is very much appreciated, Scott.

I will call you with the other questions I have.

Welcome to Bladeforums!

Just talked to Paul Bos and wanted to make the following corrections. The minimum is $70.00 not $75.00 as I posted earlier. He will also do blades one at a time, but the cost is more/blade @ 14.00 each/for up to five(after five you have hit the 70.00 minimum). If you are trying to get ahold of Paul his shop phone is 1-619-562-2370. If you don't get him leave a message or try back as he is probable out in the shop working. I highly recomend Pauls work. He does a great job and is great to work with!
