Would anyone happen to know the spring temper for this steel? Am going to order a bit of it for folders and have the upper range of hardness figured but cannot come up with the lower range of spring hardness. Looking for 49-50 RC or so. I see that Crucible reccommends RC 56-57 for blades...a little lower than I am use to ...but they say because of the high alloy content 56-57 will outperform higher harness steels. Thanks.

S60V has been discontinued. If you want a CPM steel with better edge holding you can get S90V.

I do not know the spring temper temperatures for S60V or S90V.

It has been a while since I have heat treated any 440v but, based on the notes I have written on the wall, I was tempering it at 1150 for RC 49.
When tempering these types of steels (CPM 154, S60V, etc) the hardness drops off really fast above about 1100F. As little as 25 degrees can make quite a difference. So, as furnaces/thermocouples can vary, you really need to experiment to determine the correct temp. I would start with some test pieces at 1075F and move up 25 degrees at a time until you hit the hardness you want.

There is no advantage to using a high performance steel as a spring, if you want a stainless spring, use some 440C.
