CPM-D2 Para and Rust

NO worries with that one at all. In fact, it's the same one I have riding in my front pocket right now.

I got it to show some rust....after a day at the beach and it getting salt water on it!:D I was super busy and let it sit for a day or two prior to cleaning it.

No worries though...it came right off.

I'm in humid-as-all-hell Florida and haven't had any problems with CPM-D2.

Mustard stained the blade, but the stain actually went away on it's own after cutting up some cardboard. On carbon steel, you'd need some Flitz or something to get those stains off. Good stuff. D2 is hard to form a natural patina on, unless you soak it in vinegar or cranberry juice.

Thats what I was thinking about trying.

Take apart the knife and remove the blade.

Wash with hot soapy water and dry it off with a hair dryer. Don't let water spots form. And don't handle the blade with your fingers - the oil will deposit on the blade and make the patina uneven in some parts. Use a cloth or paper towel to handle the blade.

Bring some vinegar or cranberry juice to a simmer and take it off the stove. Drop the blade in. The longer it soaks to darker the patina. :)

Thanks! When I get some time I think I'll try that.

My attempt at patina failed. I got some red wine vinegar, warmed it, and left my blade in it for 30 mins after a good cleaning/drying.

My blade looks exactly the same. Did I screw up by getting the vinegar too hot? When the blade was hanging in the vinegar I could see a bunch of bubbles forming on it...but after I took it out it looked exactly the same.

Maybe I need to try some different vinegar or maybe dip it in lemon juice or something.

I did mine with just regular white vinegar, just soaked a rag in it and wrapped it tightly around the balde and left it for about an hour. Seemed to do the trick, was a bit splotchy in parts.
