(Thanks zknives knife steel composition chart app)
Why Cpm-M4? The powder Metallurgy process Gives a knife a refined and pure grain structure which increases its strength, toughness and edge retention. It can be a couple points harder with the same toughness than a non powder form of the same steel. M4 is tougher and more abrasion resistant than D2 (just for example of a popular good steel, which i am a fan of) but not quite as rust resistant. However for sharpening it seems to be just as easy as a carbon steel. It is not a chippy steel, it can be maintained for simple tasks with a strop. I own a factory made folder in M4 That ive been cutting double layered corrugated cardboard with here and there every day for 2 months and with my buffing wheel or a strop have kept it hair whittling sharp.
. High speed steels are made to cut other steels, and i user this knife in a vice on some heavy gauge wire and it did damage it some but not enough to grab phonebook paper. Ive used it for some can opening and some prying and i havnt pushed it super far yet indestructive testing, but im waiting to do that with my own knife.Attachments
