Like the title said, heat treated without the foil. :o

I did a 45 min soak at 1950, plate quench.

Got a hardness of RC 54. Could it be the forgotten foil? From the spec sheet, this should get me more in the RC 59-60 range. :confused:

This is for a medium size kitchen knife, full flat grind if it makes any difference.

Thanks

Lots of decarb going on most likely. Depending on temper, you should see 58-59. I wonder if you'll be able to grind deep enough to get through the decarb without thinning the knife too much since it's a kitchen style knife.

Sorry, Patrice. That foil is important. :o

Thanks guys. I do have little play with the tang where I can try and see how far I would need to get.

Still can't believe I forgot the foil.:grumpy::o

I feel for you Patrice. A few weeks ago, while tempering a batch of blades in the kiln, I got busy with something else; a few hours later I had a larger knife to HT at 1950 and ran the program without removing the tempered blades. Long story short, five .090" 52100 blades went down the drain and I'm still kicking myself over it. I did put up a sign above kiln to remind me to empty it out before running a program.

C'est la vie, mon ami.

Oh ya Patrice, you've got to use it, every game

Told ya :)

Update. Ground through the decarb. Man that's hard stuff, removing 5-6 thou of it dulled a fresh 36 grit 3M 967 Ceramic belt. :( It should help me remember the foil next time. :o

On the plus side I got RC58 on the fresh steel which is good enough for me for this one.

Has anyone done this intentionally, leaving some extra steel near the edge, to get a differential temper of sorts?
