So Im pretty sure I understand 99% of this heat treat but, I still need to know one thing as my oven should be ready within the next week or so.
Here is what I plan on doing for heat treat. PLEASE suggest any changes.

1950° for 1 hr
Plate quench
Dry Ice over night
2, 2hr tempers @ 425°
Thats what Ive sort of averaged together from all the posts Ive read. BUT, for the initial hardening, I see people soaking at different temps at different times.
Do you preheat the oven to these temps THEN throw the blade in? Or do you put the blade in then ramp it up?
A little confused on that.
Thanks

45 minutes is plenty of time at 1950. Put the blade in the oven before ramping it up.

I preheat to 1400 for 15 or 20 just to let the oven warm up. Put all your blades in and let equalize for 15. Full ramp to 1950 and soak for 30. Plate quench. Dry ice bath until the oven cools below temper temp.(usually an hour or two). Temper at 400 for 1 hr and cool with water, temper again for another hour usually comes to 61ish.

Just 1 hr tempers? Ive read everywhere for 2 hour cycles.

You used to read that all the time. Now we know that in a blade thickness, one hour tempers are fine for all but the most high alloy steels. There will be no harm in two hour tempers, but it is not needed.

Nice. You have actually told me the same when I started out using 1084. Didnt figure it be ok for most steels.
