CPM154 Question.

I don't normally post here but I read just about everything I can. I'm working on my first couple of projects in another steel but was thinking about trying to do something in CPM154. I can't find any stats on this steel but read somewhere that it is rumored to have twice the toughness of 154CM... What kinds of blades and applications does this steel excell at and at what RC? Is it just good for light camp chores and kitchen chores in medium to small blade lengths or can it be used a little more heavily in a much larger blade length (if so what length would be too large?)? Sorry for the twenty questions guys but I'm new at all of this and any help woul be appreciated.

I don't have many other "premium" steels to compare with, but I've been really satisfied with my new kitchen knife in CPM154. I haven't had the knife long, but there was a noticeable improvement in edge quality over my other knives. The steel takes a very fine, polished, edge.

I had my knife heat treated and cryoed by TKS. Supposedly they shoot for about 59HRC.

Twice the toughness probably refers to transverse impact strength. In any case the CPM154 has the same chemistry as 154CM but made with the CPM technology resulting in a steel better for the maker and user .Use all the HT for 154CM in www.crucibleservice.com .I consider this one of the very best blade steels.Folding knives, chefs knives , fileting knives ,etc all work well with CPM154.

Thanks for the replies. Do you think it would do okay in a larger blade 8-10" for camping? If so would 3/16" or 5/32" be thick enough? I believe I recall seeing a large blade or two in 154CM but I'm not certain if my memory is correct or even if those applications would be practical for this steel.

You could use CPm-154 in an 8-10" blade, but I would recommend using a stainelss with more toughness like 12C27.

Okay so I've been reading up on the 12C27. For a large knife in that steel could I reasonably use 3/16" or 5/32" stock?

I sure hope so, I just made 8 knives that exceed 9" out of the stuff.

Too thick. Wanted to keep the weight down. I plan on doing a full convex grind.
