I tried CPM154 for the first time, and I'm coming up with defects in the steel. I have lengthwise marks that look like scratches in the hollow ground bevels. 1 or 2 per side. (I don't do anything lengthwise to the blade) I also have small fuzzy looking marks on the flats. (about 1 per blade) I normally use RWL34 and don't have this problem. Is this normal for CPM154 ?? I was hoping to go to CPM154 because it comes in different thinknesses than RWL.

I've never seen any issues with CPM154 and I use it fairly often. Can you get a pic of it or not?

Ive used up about 16 ft. of it from Pops and havent seen so much as a blemish. Where did you buy it? You sure its CPM 154? Maybe 154 CM?

I have to asked the same question, I spoke with Scott D last week I was looking for a drop piece for some prototype work. He told me about a piece from the first heat/batch that they did have some problems with. I did purchase the piece at a heavy discount knowing it may have some finishing issues. Scott said they have since pulled that stuff and do not sell it with out full disclosure. So you may have some of the first stuff, they have worked this out and no longer do they receive any complaints just the opposite how great the stuff finishes out.

You can call Scott and talk with him about it, because if its not from the original batch he would like to know?

i had one of the drop sheets 4x36 (all they had in the thickness i was looking for ) that was problematics but not like that
ether way crucible took care of me and im sure they will look into helping you there good people

all new steel i have received is good stuff

I just went down and buffed out 2 blades. (I had them at 9 micron) The few marks that I had turned into 15-25 per side. No need to mention who I bought the steel from. I'll get ahold of them and make sure that they know what they have. They also are good people.

Spencer, Scott works for Crucible ????

I got some of the first CPM 154 CM to make the market...from Pops sometime about a year, year and a half ago. It had those same inclusions in it and it turned out to be "Defective", per Crucible. They inadvertantly let some get on the market before the process, or the recipie, was perfected. I got three sticks that that happened to have those inclusions and they gladly replaced it free of charge. I saw the Crucible guy at the Blade this year and thanked them for making it good and he responded something to the effect "Yeah, glad we could help...we still don't know how that stuff got on the market, but it did...sure am sorry buddy..."

Its not you, nor is it your technique...it is the steel....get some current production CPM154CM steel and you won't have this problem.

BTW: After spotting the inclusions, I decided to use the blades for shop knives, personal gutting knives, etc...not for sale. They seemed to be every bit as good as the current CPM154CM...no difference in edge holding, etc. I just finished them down to a 320 grit and you would never notice....but, again, they are not for sale. Bead blasted, or scotch brite finish is too fine and the inclusions will show up...stick with a 320 grit finish if you choose to keep the steel.

Forgot to add...a BIG thank you to Pop for his assistance in this matter...another reason why he is #1 with a lot of folks on this board.

I have not had any problems with the CPM154 that I have purchased in the past year.I have not ordered much, maybe $350 worth. The stuff has no inclusions or scratches.

FYI. I just re-sharpened a hunting knife from cpm154. It wasnt shaving sharp still but it just went through a large black bear. He was very impressed with the performance and will let me know more after he gets back from his Brown Bear hunt in Alaska this month.

I found some inclusions in a blade I was buffing out Sat. Boy, it pisses me off. This is about the 3rd time I've had this with CPM 154. It's always in the 1/8" stock. I may give Pop a call. I buy all my steel from him.

I have a call into Crucible but Scott D. is out of town until Friday. I was using stock that was .2 inches thick. I'm starting to think that buying this stuff is a gamble.
