CPM154CM vs CPMS30V

For my larger knives, S30V is what I want.
Thanks Again!

For larger knives 5"+ I would go with CPM3V,A2, or even CPM154 over S30V.
Or even this INFI steel I read so much about.:thumbup:

S30V & CPM-D2 are my favorite steels for a folder.

Since the OP killed this thread I feel OK about this 'hijacking', although my question is somewhat relevant.

The S30V on my mini Ritter grip has a helluva time on the Sharpmaker. I cannot get it to shave, no matter the time spent on it or technique. Time: I've probably went over the 2000 stroke mark. Technique: all of my other blades (in D2, AUS8, 13c26, 8Cr13MoV, 4xx, and CRK's s30v) shape up just fine. Can anyone help me here? Or at least tell me you suffer the same results?

Do you have the coarse diamond rods?If you don't,get them. They make a world of difference on harder steels.I think I paid aprox.$70- for mine, can't remember where though(maybe knifeworks). They work good with ZPD-189 & that's some of the hardest stuff available(rc 65-68!)They also work well with M4.

I was just asking about the d-rods on the Canadian sub-forum earlier tonight. Thanks for the advice, I'm gonna order them immediately.

I would only recommend coarse diamond rods for reprofiling. They have no other use for sharpening. FINE diamond rods on the other hand are great for things like S30V.

This thread confirmed what I have come to know about the new knife steels; are the benefits of one steel that much better when one steel vs another??

well this discussion interests me because i believe i'm getting a ritter grip AND sharpmaker for my birthday next month. What's the deal with the Ritter's S30V?

I don't believe it is a problem with the Ritter specifically, but more so with Benchmade's heat treatment on some of their older batches of s30v. Although I remember someone on the British blade forum having the same problem with the Ritter a couple years ago... but that still doesn't necessarily indict the Ritter, as it is more likely an off batch of s30v heat treat or more likely user sharpening error. I think the Brit sorted out his problem with diamonds as well. So now the issue is coarse diamond rods for Sharpmaker or something finer from DMT.

if ya are expecting nite & day difference, no.

as long as ya are speaking of modern good steel ie 154, s30, M2,D2, etc.
