Would forging and the consequent thermal cycling negate the advantages gained through the CPM process? I have not read any direct refences to the forgeability of the CPM steels.

It is "forgeable" in that it has gone through the rolling process. But do do it in your shop would certain be a challenge.

Bailey Bradshaw forges CPM3V -- but from what I know, he uses a press a lot when working with it.

I know of at least two makers that have and do forge it. One told me it wasn't as bad as he thought it would be. Haven't asked the other. I was also informed by a retailer that forgering at slightly lower temps helps. I don't think there is any benefit to forging and am not certain of any negative consequences in doing so or even the process. Also I am not an expert of any kind on metallurgy or forging so take that into consideration when reading the above.

Edit: Bradshaw was one of the people I eluded to and yes a press sounds like it would help a lot.

The impression I got from Bradshaw's comments about it a while back was that he was primarily doing it as an efficient way to reduce the thick CPM3V stock that he could easily get down to something that he could make a knife out of -- of course, while he's got it hot and is mashing it anyway, might as well make the knife as well.
