I just hung up the phone with Art Townley of Crucible Materials, the makers of CPM440V. Art states that Crucible recognizes the knifemakers as an industry and market for their steels, and has set up special pricing to meet the knife industry needs. CPM440V is in stock and available direct from them. Contact Art at (800)365-1161. They also have great prices on D2 and A2 tool steels.

I've recently bought CPM-3V and A2 from them, and the prices were about half other sources. I did find that the service personnel were completely unfamiliar with knife terms and sizes, but we got there. Funny thing though, the last time I ordered the guy told me CPM-3V was too expensive to use for knives. I guess that ruins my plans for a line of Super Ginzu's.

Chris,
A few months ago, I had just about the same experience as Tom did
mad.gif
I had to BEG, 2 or 3 times for information and never did get any!!
Maybe they have changed? I'll give them another try.

That's not good, especially when I endorse them! By accident, I started dealing with the Huntsville, Alabama plant (800.365.1161) and have had nothing but good luck! Quick, courtious sevice, helpful people. Art said he is looking forward to hearing from knifemakers. Give him a try. I think your experience with him will be better than what you have had in the past with the others. Good luck guys.

When I got my mill runs of 420V and 3V I found that the local offices had allot of bad
info.
my local rep said 440v was not made any more and I could not get any. not so they had 12
tons at the time.
The guy to talk to is Ed Severson at the main office( 1 800 365-1185 )he is the Knifemakers way in.
The local reps are used to big orders and when you ask for 1-2 bars of 1\8 3\16 ect they
kind of lose interest.
Or you can do what I did order a mill run at 5 or 6 K$.

Ed, where is that guy you deal with? I just tried to order some more steel and wasted a good bit of the morning. The first guy I spoke with didn't know they made 154CM. Then he couldn't tell me the per piece price. Then another guy got testy with me because I suggested the first guy ought to know what steels they make. He said they had it, but the price he gave was higher than from Hitachi's distributors for ATS-34. Then he couldn't tell me if I could order it; he had to check. I'm really frustrated. And yes, this was the Birmingham office. I'd really like to spend my steel money with Crucible, but their customer service sucks!!

OK, I vented, now I'm better...

typical big company policy....for a few bucks they just arent interested...thats what happens when you wear a suit...get paid a salary...and work in some giant industry. disclaimer:not always...but usually.

Jerry
Call Ed Severson at the # in my post above.
Tell him what you need and he can send the where and how to your local rep.
If you call my rep it will just go back to yours.

I phoned Severson. He's out this week, but I spoke with someone in his office, who gave me two numbers to call. One didn't answer; the other said they couldn't take my order even though they had the steel in stock. Said I needed to call the office that gave me the first run-around. I reported this back to the Camillus office and was told they would call me back. That was over 2 hours ago. I told them about this forum, and would love for the president of Crucible Steel to read this.

I used to be in marketing, and this is the worst I've ever seen.

Thanks anyway Ed.

I just got an email from Crucible telling me they've appointed a committee to take care of these problems. I feel better already. Yeah right. Tom, the difference between big companies in the past and big companies now is this forum. Before I could only kick the grinder and yell at the walls. Now I can make others aware of how they do business.

Ed, what size is the 3V, and are you willing to sell some?

Chris, I had talked to Art yesterday. He just phoned and was most helpful. I really don't think the problem was ever Art, it was the culture and having to change how they do business when dealing with guys like us. I have to say this, Crucible did read this thread and I got emails from the people who needed to know about the problem. They dealt with it, and I would say we knifemakers have an excellent source of what we need most, steel. It pleases me not to have to buy Japanese steel.

Ed, I still want that 3V from you though. It is exactly the size and cut I want.

All's well that ends well. Sorry for all the commotion I created.

yes...this forum is good...but its the internet that made it happen...now if a knifemaker is stiffing people or making a junk product everyone on the planet knows in a couple of days...instead of only a few people complaining at knife shows like before. i hope crucible does something... they really made me mad....i mean they took my order...my credit card number...and never sent anything....unbelieveable...i would use stronger language but im a Christian... sincerely.
