A member sent me some steel to play with. One of the billets was .187" x 2" x 5", much too small to do anything except a folder... but I'm very determined. I found a peice of .187" 154CM that I'm having TIG'd to the blade steel. The joint is ground so that there is a V grind on both sides of the contact areas. Once it is welded, it will be surface ground and then finished like any other knife.

This may end up being the one knife I make that I decide to keep as a fixed EDC. I'm thinking black textured G10 with black coated Chicago screws to resemble the Emerson pivots.

Blade catching device.

Because the last 5 times I was in a blade on blade knife fight... I kept telling myself that I needed a blade catcher.

:D

Tagged, but I'm more interested in the weld than the knife.

I certified in stick, MIG, and carbon pipe many years ago. The school went bankrupt before I could practice much for TIG. I was told that the weld is often stronger than the base metal.

How are you going to TIG weld and then HT without worrying about the weld? Conversely, how could you TIG weld an already HT blade and not ruin the temper.

I asked Darrel Ralph about this. He said weld first and surface grind. Then grind bevels and HT. After HT, stress relieve the joint... guess I'll buying some heat control paste.

This is looking like an interesting project. Will you be testing the strength of the weld in any way post heat treat?

I'll do some full body weight overhead stabs and such.

I am interested to see the finished product. What filler rod are you planning to use?

That's up to my friend. He's a union welder and knifemaker.

After welding and first annealing. It's currently annealing again, buried in the cat litter.
