CPMS110V fixed blade homage to the Super CQC7

Unsurprising (to me anyway). You have a carbon equivalent of about 8% just on the 110V, anything over about .5% is generally considered difficult to weld.

I wondered if that might happen. Any detail on the welding settings/filler/etc?

I don't know the details on the settings or filler. The break happened after I was flexing it 12 hours after the 3rd annealing.

Have you done the same flexing to a solid piece of similar material with no failure? I know you don't have another piece of S110V, but any similar CPM steel?

Annealing was bringing the joint area to orange/yellow and letting cool in cat litter.

I don't have any other CPM steels to test.

probably was not annealing much at all. the kitty litter at room temperature really won't keep it above MS for very long at all, and the nose of the cooling curve on S110V must be insane.

I think you are very right.

Alloys such as these are very difficult to weld. I'm sure there is a way to do it, but I'm equally sure it's more expensive than just buying the full length bar of S110V. If you want to try again with this plan, let me know.

I learned that I don't want to try this again.

Maybe I'm just a n00b, but I noticed that the break was at the weld, but not exactly along it.

Does this mean anything?

Shame, but unsurprising really. Oh well...just turn it into a nice folder or a cool pocket fixed blade.

Matt - sorry to see this happen, but you (and we) learn this way. And it's interesting to have your perspective on these things as you improve on your skills.

Wayne Goddard talked about a similar idea in his $50 knife Shop book (pgs. 68 and 93.) The concept there was to weld a tang onto a blade, but I think it's the same kind of idea.

I'm sending you a PM.

Gadzooks, but that's a wonderful concept. Too bad I'll never be able to afford it as a folder, or if I could, get it done without the quasi-Wave/flipper/etc. Just not satisfied with the steels being used, uh, anywhere!
Fantastic little project, fun to've watched!
