Has spyderco ever used this steel? Rumor is it was discontinued but it is currently being produced.

It's way too hard to work on, and it will wear out the Belts/Grinders

CPM released CPM 110V as an alternative and knife makers say it's easier to work on and still has stellar performance

There were plans for a Native in S125V a few years back, but problems with rolling out the steel shelved the project. I think Sal once mentioned a prototype S125V Military, but that is as far as it got, too.

I think the only production knife in S125V is a limited run of Harsey folders from Fantoni. A member on this forum, Hardheart, had some listed for sale in the dealers' area.

Thanks for the links. I saw the catra results you listed on the spyderco forum. I guess we don't have any for 110

I know about this "urban legend" - it travell from one discussion to another for years, but origin and nature of this info is unclear. I asked Sal several time - he does not commenting this.

CATRA restults looks totally different and what are those numbers and where they are from nobody really knows. So I do not consider them as something to pay attention to, until it will be clear.

I suspect that CPM S125V will show excellent wear resistance but poor edge holding due to high carbides volume which make edge easier to fall apart on very end. Same as CPM S90V and CPM 10V and CPM S110V which show high wear resistance, but edge holding not so great. Imagine edge made out of high abrasive ceramic sharpening stone or cutting disk.

Thanks, Vassili.

I checked the Spyderco site and the highest level of steel in this series that they list is S90v.

Highest level steel should be CTS-XHP and ZDP-189 (2nd and 3rd places in my edge holding tests) and CPM S90V is below top steels (13th place).

Thanks, Vassili,

 Looks to me like they're from Sal as related by Phil Wilson. :D

Here's the CATRA website for their machines:

http://www.catra.org/pages/products/kniveslevel1/slt.htm

"...The test produces two indications:
- ICP (Initial Cutting Performance) representing the cutting ability (sharpness) of the blade as supplied
- TCC (Total Card Cut) which represents the life of the blade by giving a measure of its total cutting ability..."

Seems pretty straight forward to me. They even offer testing and reports if you want to send them your knives. It would be interesting to compare their test results with your test results.

He has also been prying at spyderco and others for a while now about their private testing info.

If you check your link, this is how CATRA results looks like:

And another ones from Diamond Dlades:

So There I can understand what the numbers are. This is bit different then this:

Here is the order based on what Sal (Spyderco) has related to me..

440C 360-400
VG10 500-510
S30V 550-580
S90V 750
ZDP 189 750
S125V 1200

And there is no any comment from Sal or Phil about this numbers. Until this will be clear - this numbers is just a legend, rumor, whatever...

On my test both CPM S90V and CPM 10V show same 13th and 14th results while Spyderco ZDP 3rd.

Thanks, Vassili.
