Cqc 7 vs 940

I too am in northern Michigan (north of petoskey), where abouts are you?
I live in northern Michigan at a cabin so I use my knife every day. Occasionally I use a knife at work just to open boxes. I don't do anything that would put a lot of stress on a knife the worst thing might be opening a can of paint.

Ah, not to far. I have always wanted to get a 940, I like the benchmades I've had.

I know they have a devoted following but, in my opinion, Emersons just aren't that impressive. I'd had a few, but always end up selling them. The BM 940, however, is a classic design, is well-made, and the Axis lock is excellent. It's a very user-friendly knife. I agree withe recommendation to get the 940-1501.

The between the 940-1 and 940-1501 there isn't a huge performance gap, but there is a significant price difference.

If the looks can justify the cost differential, then judge them as equals. If cost is a deal breaker, you shouldn't feel you are lacking much by going with the 940-1 as long as you have the diamonds to sharpen it (mind you that diamonds will be needed to sharpen the cpm-20cv too).

A. The 940-1501 costs less than the 940-1, so if cost is a deal breaker, he won't lack much by going with the 940-1501. He'll miss the carbon fiber. That's basically it.
B CPM-20CV is the same as M390, and it does not need diamonds to sharpen it. I can easily sharpen my 810-1401 (M390) and my GSO-4.1 (also M390) with Shapton Glass stones and Edge Pro stones. S90V can be done on Shapton Glass as well, but not nearly as easily as CPM020CV/M390.

Another vote for the 940, it's a fantastic knife, so much blade for the size and weight. Not to mention it's a real looker, had mine on me since the day it arrived, it always accompanies whatever larger folder i carry.

I am a big Emerson fan. I have had like tons of them. That being said, the 940 is a way better knife in everyway. The only thing I don't like about the 940 is there is a model called the 710 which I prefer.

Last I had seen in the exchange the 940-1 could be had for less, but that may have change since I last checked.

I haven't dealt with Shapton Glass nor do I have an edge pro, so I appreciate the input.
I sharpen freehand and use diamond and ceramic for my carbide rich alloys.
- I guess if ceramic works, glass stones would be as affective.

Between my 940 and CQC-7AW, the 940 has gotten more use. The 940 carries in pocket great, and the reverse tanto/sheepsfoot blade is very handy for most of my EDC knife uses. Also, the Axis lock is fun to flip open and closed, if you find yourself doing that a lot. ;) The ergos on the CQC-7 are simple, yet quite comfortable. The only reason my CQC-7 doesn't get more use is because I usually reach for my Mini-Commander if I'm in the mood for an Emerson.

Just in case anyone stumbles upon this I bought the 940 and it's perfect, by far my favorite knife. If you are contemplating getting the 940 just get it you will have no regrets.

Ive had a 940, I thought it was a nice knife. Mine was centered and never had any problems with it. Have fun choosing!

I recommend you to go with the 940.
The CQC 7 is very nice but price wise, the overall quality, finish and versatility of the 940 will be better.
The 940 (and its variations, including the 943...) are very robust EDC with a very good blade/handle ratio and a very light weight.
If you will use the knife as an urban EDC or a standard backpaking use it will be more than capable to deal with any tasks you need.
The only interest I see to go the the CQC7 is when you need more handle (if you work with gloves for exemple)... which may not be most of the time.

Also, while I like the Emerson design, I shall say that the price seems very high for me considering the material used and the finish quality.
In aditoin the chisel grind still bugs me....

Overall I think the 940 is a better value for the price. It is a good packetable EDC that can be used for most tasks from food prep to rope or cardboard cutting.
And if you work with glove or need a compact knife for tasks requiring strength and leverage, maybe going for a large EDC may be better. But in this case I think it my be better value than the CQC7 either at Spyderco, benchmade or Zero Tolerance.

Well I don't have any pictures to contribute at the moment but maybe I will put some up tomorrow, hopefully I don't get banned in the meantime. But yes I love this knife and I'm wondering why I didn't buy years ago. The only problem I have with it is as a play with the knife the pivot gets loose. I found a solution with blue loctite so hopefully that solves it.

Glad you like your 940. Blue loktite should fix your problem. Mine did the same thing.
