Now this is more like it. I loosened the pivot screw a tad because the blade was tight. It is centered and the lock is not sticky. There is a big difference between this knife and my CQC-8. I have been working it a bit and it already is smoother. I'm glad that Emerson talked me into sending the CQC-8 back to them. Now, any suggestions for my next one?

Nice, Ray.
The CQC7 is all you need.
I like the Roadhouse. I'd like it better with a chisel ground blade.

I too started with the seven and am now expecting my fourth emerson in the mail :) BEWARE! Once you start it's hard to stop. As far as your next one what I would suggest is compiling a list of the models you want and just getting them in the order they are available

just picked up a cqc-7 this week. i have been really enjoying the knife. the wave has already destroyed a pair of jeans. i picked up a black blade combo edge version. i really like emerson serations and i think it helps you start your cut with difficult media. my only complaint so far is the knife is not a good slicer. i am thinking about a mini commander or a horseman so i can have an emerson that can slice.

Truthfully, the edge geometry of all emersons aren't particularly conducive to slicing; the primary grinds on them are pretty shallow so you're never going to have excellent performance, but they're definitely still decent. My CQC 7 is arriving tomorrow, but I have a Horseman and Mini Commander so I will be able to compare performance for you soon.

thank you! i have run it through quite a bit of testing at work and at home. for me the serations on this knife are a life saver. i dont know if it is the tanto blade or the poor geometry but this knife does not have very good cutting power like a knife such as the benchmade 710 or the military.but this seems to be the perfect knife that you can tweek and pry with or cutting through nasty things like fire hose or anything like that at work. so far it seems like an excellent beater knife. i can see me carrying this knife as a firefighter/ paramedic for a long time. i dont need an amazing slicer but i do need a knife that i can do non knife things with.

i look forward to your comments on the cqc-7

For a duty knife (LEO/EMT), it worked really well for me. Granted, LEOs tend to abuse our knives, but so do firefighters. I gave it to my son because it never let me down.

Received my CQC 7BW today, and it came insanely smooth. After cleaning out the traditional Emerson gunk, it's actually now really gritty. This is definitely the first time I've had this issue  Truthfully, I'm not sure if I like it. Aesthetically, it seems to look better proportioned in pictures; the blade to handle ratio doesn't bother me so much as the blade height to handle height looks pretty goofy. It stands to see if it will grow on me.

It will grow on you. When I first saw one, it didn't do much for me, and then I started paying attention to Rolf's praise of the critters. Now, the 7V is my 'honest to God' EDC. Great knives!

7 is a classic. i think as an emerson fan, we all should try to own the 7, 8, and the commander....and if u can find the karambit, get it too...all very iconic knives =D

As far as I'm concerned, the 7 is THE Emerson production line knife. The rest are it's more flashy underlings. CQC-7 is among my favorite knives of all time.

I reprofiled mine tonight because the edge had to be at least 50 degrees so it pretty much didn't cut at all, more just wedged through material. I think I'm gonna enjoy it more now, although it looks a little mangled now. Should make using it much easier now!

I cringed a bit with that 'mangled' comment, but what the hell, you made it your own. :)

"Mangled" is definitely a bit of an exaggeration - it scratched up the grind a bit reprofiling it, and the subtip was moved forward a bit because I wasn't careful. Functionally, it's far improved, so I'm not too worried. You should see the height of the secondary bevel now!
