CQD Blade play

He told me that there is a dent on the plunge lock bar from most likely wrist flickings and he told me that this type of opening method is not healthy for the knife. He also stated that even with the short time I have it, one or two wrist flicks would damage the lock and in the future this type of opening method should not be use.
That is a pretty horrible standard, assuming the parts are hardened steel. I would not use that opening method either as that nonsense would stop me from getting the knife.

I was just going to purchase this exact knife as I have wanted one for a long time. I wanted it for EDC but figured the price would get to me shortly after I put the first scratch in it and then it would end up in a display case. I too was under the impression that MOD produced near indestructable knives? They state tolerences that of 13 thousands a human hair. Should I steer clear of MOD or just use the hell out of it as it may not be worthy of being in my display case? I just join the forum today because this looks llike a good place to get honest opinions. Thanks!

Evil Steel, welcome to Bladeforums. You will get lots of opinions here! :D

I keep a MOD CQD and a CQD Mark II by the front door, in case I want a hard use knife with me, large or small. I've used them for brush clearing. They are about as indestructible as folders get, on a level with the Extrema Ratio and Strider folders.

I have never seen anything like blade play or even pivot loosening in the CQD, although I do tighten the Mark II from time to time. I got both of them second hand and the Mark II had seen good service.

You will find, over time here, that certain members of the forum have a habit of whining, especially about knives they personally dislike. Wait for the alternate opinions, and evaluate who really uses the knives, and who crafts their opinions out of hot air.

Flicking. We see great arguments over which knives can take it and which can't, but I cannot recall a clear statement as to what constitutes "flicking".

I generally open my knives smoothly and slowly, controlling the blade all the way out. Snapping them open, even by the thumbstud or opening hole, can fling the knife out of a careless grip. Snapping them open with additional centrifugal force by adding wrist action, exacerbates that problem.

It also creates obvious shock of metal on metal -- blade tang on stop pin or studs on the bolster. Why would you want to generate that much stress except on a few, hopefully rare occasions when a fraction of a second saved is critical? Isn't control of your knife more critical than speed?

Be sure the CQD is the right size knife for you then go ahead and get one. If you do get a lemon, which is highly unlikely, they'll take care of it. More likely, you will find you have a knife too big and strong for most ordinary carry. (That's why I got the Mark II for backup. :p )

Not according to Jim Ray from MOD, whose comment in the above places them at about the lowest level I have seen for folders. One to two inertial openings and the lock is damaged, I think you need to check the defination for indestructible. You can get ~20$ FRN folders which are more durable than that.

It Seems To Me As Though This Knife Is Just Like Any Other Man Made Piece Of Equipment, Some Might Wear Out Or Break When Others Might Last Forever. It Also Seems That This Knife Is Very Durable. I Have Not Had Any Problems With Mine But At The Same Time I Just Found It Odd That These Knives Were Not Meant To Be Flicked. I Can Understand That It Is Very Hard On A Knife When You Have Two Pieces Of Steel Slamming Against Each Other At That Amount Of Force. At The Same Time I Love The Design Of This Knife. I Am An Amatuer When It Comes To Knives But The Features And Capabilities Of The Mark 1 Are Very Appealing To Me. I Have Not Seen Any Other Knife Quite Like This Which Is Why I Chose This Knife And If It Should Experience Problems It Sounds Like Mod Will Stick Behind You Even If You Might Have Caused The Problem.

Anyone have any updates about the "flicking" problem? I just received my Mk2 today in the mail and flicked it a few times, but after reading this thread, I'm afraid to do it again...I also noticed that the pocket clip is a bit lose...Ie can move from side to side. Is this normal for the Mk2?

I would send it back to MOD. Let them take care of it. When I received my Strider PT, I noticed that there was lateral blade play and it rattled when closed. Off it went to Strider. I would do the same with the MOD. My $.02.
