Tested the CR Umnumzaan this morning cutting 5/8" Manila rope and Cardboard.

Made 80 Cuts on 5/8" Mainila Rope then went straight to cardboard, the edge was 600 Grit off the EP, 40 degrees inclusive and it did extremely well with no edge damage noticed. The knife handled extremely well over the testing as was expected.

Rope that was cut.

Great EDC blade all around and will hold an edge for a long time and will serve well.

Do you think if you added it to manilla rope test thread it would fall in same category as other blade tested at 58.5 or better??

I think it would do better, it really holds an edge well, very well, I think this one is closer to 59 the way it cuts.

My cousin gave me his umnum to use at work because I wasn't sure if it could hold up to the tasks it would put it threw at my job at 58 59. Ordered my starbenza a week later :D

I guess it was working for you then. :)

Cool. :D

Have to take it apart tomorrow after my grease gets here and clean it up then lube it and it will be good to go. :)

Let me know if you find it a bit "touchy" to when putting it back together. And by that I mean, I have to be pretty precise with tightening the pivot to get the blade centered and smooth to open. I find that 1/8th turn to tight will lock the blade up and a 1/8th turn too loose will result in an off centered blade.

It wasn't that bad really, easiest knife I ever had to take apart and put back together. :)

I just tightened it down until the blade was centered and it was good for me, but yeah if you go too far it will slow the blade down.

How would you say this would do in a self defense defense situation blade deployment wise? I'm looking to replace my EDC and upgrade and I've been stuck on a few knives cost not being the biggest factor. I'm used to a flipper and tip down carry but I'm fine with learning a new system as long as it's able to be opened easily enough for a folder. Also looking at a Benchmade Rift or a ZT 0200. Sorry if this is in the wrong section... new member long time reader here...

It's not a SD knife by design, but it will work just as well as any other knife around the same size.

I've watched some of your videos and they were very helpful but still stuck. And yeah I know it's not an SD knife but I didn't know if for a folder it can cover that position as well as any other speed wise. Also I currently own a CRKT m16-14d OIF and I love how much of tank it is and I have never been able to seriously damage it but it sorta sucks as an actual cutting knife seeing as after any small task I need to re-sharpen it. I saw you had a benchmade in your videos too and a ZT if I'm not mistaken. Like I said before, looking at a good all around EDC knife from carrying at work, to the woods (have larger fixed blades for serious camping) and I'm looking at the BM 950 Rift and a ZT 0200 along with a Zaan. Though I could always buy the BM and the ZT for the cost of the Zaan... but what's the fun in that? I have been so mind-locked on those three knives that I decided to come to the people here. I wish I could hold all three but the only place around here sells BM only so yeah.

As always Jim, your reviews are hazardous to people's wallets. This one seems to be sold out every place I look.

I guess it could fit that role if need be, it opens fast enough for sure.

I don't think of my knives as weapons, folders anyway.

Yeah, I prefer a thick fixed blade for that. And not only for SD, but I can slam it into a tree for giggles:D without a second thought about broken locks, loose screws, pivot, etc:thumbup:. I also find something objectionable about using a $400 knife to defend yourself with, mostly because I'm sure to never see the knife again(or the light of day;)).

Nope, better to use a $175 Strider cord wrapped fixed blade:thumbup:.

I think of my knives as tools, not SD weapons, but like any knife if needed although highly unlikely it will ever be needed to fill that role.

Not something I really think about.

Ok sorry if I sorta brought my own question off topic. In no way am I trying to get the best weapon or replace a fixed blade, so forgive me for misleading you guys. I would rather have a fixed blade on me at all times but I use my knife hourly and pulling a fixed blade out would terrify the sheeple, but for some reason my large folders don't. I am looking for a good edc between the three knives I listed and also open to a few suggestions. I will be using it for light bush craft when doing short hikes ie whittling, small branch chopping, gutting fish, fire prep and what you'd normally use a small fixed blade for. Also for urban use of going though lots of boxes, cutting rope, plastic ties, opening those stupid stiff heat sealed packaged that everything seems to come in nowadays, cutting paper, and whatever else you could use a knife for. SD would work with any knife I listed but I'm not planning on going into the ghetto whipping it out or going vigilante but in IL there is no concealed carry so my knife and my surefire e2d putting out 1100 lumens is my only defense if I ever (hopefully never) need it.

Also thank you for your quick replies so far and the great info, this is the most helpful sight for knives and anything related that I have ever been too.

The ZAAN will cover all of what you stated above. :)

My video thread here pretty much sums it all up.
