Cr123

I bet he mixed old cells and new cells. SF's batteries have built in protections to avoid those type of issues described in that thread, though I suppose a defect could occur. Then again, besides the box, there's really no way of telling what type of cells were in his 9Z...

Either way, CR123's can explode, and remember that they were designed, originally, for high drain camera flashes, NOT constant-on light applications.

There's a big discussion about what happened over at candle power forums. The guy hasn't bothered to contact Surefire about his 9Z turning into a pipe-bomb. Other than possibly mixing new cells with old ones, he may have mixed new and partially depleted cells. (A big no-no).

Another possibility? One of the exploded cells still has an outline of the brand name on it. Just an outline. But it looks far more like a Battery Station CR123 cell than a Surefire one. Current Battery Station cells are indeed Made in America. But they used to be Made in China. The owner of B.S. stopped having his cells made in China after another incident of "vent with flame" took place. But there are still quite a few of the older cells floating around. It's possible that the owner of the 9Z mixed and matched a couple of Surefire cells with one older B.S. cell.

It seems something is not quite right. I have a 9Z myself. If my vintage Surefire exploded through no fault of my own, I'd be screaming at one of their customer service reps. seconds afterwards. But this guy hasn't even bothered to contact Surefire.
