Crack in GEC Esquire acrylic scale. Risk of spreading?

Wait a minute, wait a minute, wait a minute!!!!!! Your wife bought that knife for you as a special anniversary present. Just live with it as it is. It's only a small flaw. Think of it this way. You've probably got a couple of flaws yourself but your wife hasn't returned you for a fix so just leave the knife as is and every time you use the knife you'll get a warm and fuzzy feeling about her thoughtfullness.

Jeez!!!!!! I hope you haven't mentioned this to your wife.

My comment did not come out as intended. For that I am sorry. However I wish my wife would buy me an Esquire. Crack and all. They are getting hard to find and I won't do the Bay thing.

My thoughts on this are:

1 - That's a shame that something new with sentimental value has a flaw like that
2 - I'd follow Glennbad's suggestion and use some superglue to fill in the crack. Little sanding and polishing and it will look like new
3 - Since it already has a "ding" you should have no regrets about carrying and using it

Great knife, though, crack and all. Hope it brings you plenty of use and good memories.

I like this! A profound metaphor!

Don't get me wrong: getting this knife from my wife makes it the most special knife I own, I never thought of carrying an Esquire but love the pattern now.

As long as the scale isn't in danger of further damage, I am not planning on doing anything with it. And on top of that, I really like Ed's metaphor.

I'm sure the cover will wear just fine and I'm glad you liked the metaphor. Just remember, if you did mention it to your wife and she smiled and shook her head up and down while saying "I understand Dear", you'll never ever know what she was really saying in the back of her mind.

Enjoy the knife. It's a looker.

It was a 10 year anniversary present: I may not be wise but I've learned enough already to know when to keep my mouth shut. And really Ed, the metaphor really struck me. Not to the point of where I prefer it with the crack... but almost.

Macchina, I'm sorry about the pin crack, but am glad you've received some good advice, an embraceable metaphor, and a really great knife. :)

The Esquire appears almost miniature next to many other knives, but packs a wonderful blade choice. It looks good in almost any garb, but I especially like how well the horizontally-striped blue denim micarta suits the pattern.

In case you have not yet discovered this, the otherwise refined and dignified material sparkles in the right light:

Carry it for a year, at your next anniversary decide if the crack still bothers you. If so send it to a service provider for the scales of your choice.
Congratulations on your marriage, it takes a lot to make one work

I would send it back to gec and ask for a fix. Absolutely unacceptable on a brand new knife from a HIGHLY respected maker.

I'm glad you decided to let it be. You can always have it repaired later in the unlikely event that it does spread.
