That is exactly what I was thinking scrolling through this thread, it kinda looks like the studs are kept in place by an interference fit. If that was the case, a small error in either the hole size in the blade, or the diameter of the stud could cause excessive stresses at that point. This excessive stress, either by itself or coupled with a stress concentration left over from manufacture (Heat treat, machining, ect.) could crack the blade as shown.
All speculation of course, and depends on how the thumb studs are attached.
