Cracked Dhankuta test-to-failure thread

Great pics Dan. You should post a link or the pics over in the shop talk. Let some of those anvil and hammer guys take a look at it. I am interested in seeing the Rc results myself. What kind of hammer did you use and how hard did you smack it? And no matter what you do with it that horn handle has to end up on something and not wasted!
I will eventually. I've sent the pics to a knifemaker, we'll see what he has to say about it.

After grinding one of the breaks and then etching, I'll send it out for RH testing. Maybe he can poke the innards too? (rather than just the face) I'll ask.

I used a 24 oz claw hammer and hit it with a fairly good blow. Certainly was a tap, tap, tap, tap.....

I want to take the horn handle off, forge a new blade from it, put the handle back on and then test it again.....see what happens.

Why not, right? It was a throw-away anyway. Bill said I could beat on it - didn't need it back.

Thanks for the interesting info Dan. I tried to get a shot of the handle, such as yours, but my lighting and camera just weren't up to the task. Sure was Purty.

I figured that the blade was likely still strong enough to stand up to normal use and am glad to see that indeed it was. I have never use or abused a knife of this heft to failure and doubt that I would ever have broken this one either. Regardless, I was still disappointed about the crack. It created doubt in the back of my mind and was always something I noticed when looking at it. This was my first HI product.

Never fear though, response from Bill and Yangdu, Dan and many other forum members was outstanding and helpful. No second guessing, very little discussion, just taken care of as Bill said it would be. Always enjoy when transactions go smoothly with nothing but informal discussion and trust in one another. Of course, all of you already knew it would go that way.

The stag handled AK that I traded up to is absolutely awesome. So much so, that I immediately purchased another as soon as I could get in on a special. This time a villager model AK by Bura. I am attaching a picture of them to check out, pardon the gun in the middle. Now I am completely hooked and expecting a WWII to be arriving at my home tonight. :D There will be more to come as many of my less internet savvy friends want some too. I suspect this is just the beginning of a crazed spending spree.

Big thank you to Bill & Yangdu, and thanks again to Dan for posting this information.

I was thinking the same for my horn Seax...

I agree with Khukuri Monster. From what I have seen, the edge grain should have a silky, smooth, refined look. At least thats my experience from breaking old files, sawz-all blades, and Spyderco tips.

Just east of us is the Ameican Society for Metals. I've hired them to investigate failures in metal before, and they do really interesting high-magnification pics: 1000x, 5000x, 10,000x. Then they tell you what it all means -- sudden, gradual, one hit, series of forces. Fascinating stuff. Thank you (again), Dan.

Don't get me wrong.....I'm not saying the grain is perfect.

I'm not really saying anything......yet.....I want to see the RH test and the etch first before I make a real judgment.
