I ran a search a hundred times and couldn't find any threads titled with the key words "Craft Beer". If you couldn't tell by my avatar, I'm a craft beer enthusiast. I know there are many here, we even have a 'Knives and Beer' thread somewhere, but I thought it would be nice to have a separate beer thread for us beer snobs. Being from Louisiana, we have many local breweries and the best food in the world, it's true. :D

I'll start it off with how I got into craft beer:

When I started drinking beer, I preferred popping the top on an ice cold Coors Light can. A buddy and I used to sit on the porch and kill a case in a few hours, like Louisiana kids do. Well, I had always seen Abita Brewing Co. beers at the grocery store and knew they were made in Louisiana, but never bothered to try them. Then one day, I got to try Abita AndyGator. It was strange, like malt liquor. I didn't know anything about craft beer and thought that all of it must be like AndyGator. Boy was I wrong :D I began my journey by trying everything and anything local. In Louisiana culture, staying local is a major part of how we live day to day.

I found the Untapp'd App and began logging my beverages, with each new brew that I tried. I am up to a measly 295 unique beers. Breaking it down, by local breweries, you can see that I stay loyal to Abita, as it was my gateway to craft beer. It also helps they are right down the road

So far, I've thankfully been able to try beers from these amazing Louisiana breweries:
Brewery (Location) - # of Unique Beers

40 Arpent Brewing Co. (Arabi, LA) - 3
Abita Brewing Co. (Abita Springs, LA) - 37
Bayou Teche Brewing (Arnaudville, LA) - 6
Chafunkta Brewing Co. (Mandeville, LA) - 3
Covington Brewhouse (Covington, LA) - 5
Gnarly Barley Brewing (Hammond, LA) - 3
Great Raft Brewing (Shreveport, LA) - 1
Mudbug Brewery (Thibodaux, LA) - 1
NOLA Brewing (New Orleans, LA) - 11
Old Rail Brewing Co. (Mandeville, LA) - 15
Parish Brewing Co. (Broussard, LA) - 5
Tin Roof Brewing Co. (Baton Rouge, LA) - 6

Here's a little beer porn, for all to enjoy. Cheers!

I also enjoy collecting Growlers. My plan is to get one growler from every brewery that I visit. Some breweries did not have growlers at the time.

Looks like fun. My brother has the collection of growlers, and he takes all my pint glasses, lol.

I don't really have any photos handy, but there's a lot of good stuff up here.

4. Michigan
The Great Lakes State may not be a prolific hops producer, or contain one brewery for every man, woman, and child (they do have about two for every 100,000 adults, according to the Brewers Association). But mittens were meant for holding cold brews, and Michigan happens to host some of the best damned breweries in the country.

There’s a reason that the annual release of Bell’s Oberon is like a state holiday, and why its Two-Hearted is consistently ranked among the best IPAs in the world, even as many drinkers don’t realize it’s an IPA. Or why Larry Bell’s neighbors to the North, Grand Rapids’ Founders, has become one of the nation’s most respected brewers, so much so that Grand Rapids is now on the map as a destination beer city. Why, folks set up shop in the tiny lake town of Bellaire just to sip Short's, or head South to Dexter for a look at how Jolly Pumpkin is made.

Beer in Michigan is a way of life, an economic booster that’s helping Detroit pull out of the apocalypse and a soul cleanser up in the UP, where long winters are made better with a growler from Ore Dock. And if that’s not convincing enough, consider this: in Ann Arbor and East Lansing, when the chaos of a tailgate clears, you’ll see as many empty bottles of craft beer scattered about as you will tallboys with holes punched in the side. In Michigan, beer love starts early.

I'll have to see if I can find some photos! I'm sure they're on my instagram somewhere.

Laws recently changed a bit here in Ohio so we're seeing a sudden boom of microbreweries and I'm loving every second of it. Unfortunately, ours are late to the market so most of them aren't bottling or selling too much outside of the brewery, but it's awesome to go out and drink something local and good. If you're ever in the area Toxic Brew Company, Yellow Springs Brewery and Warped Wing Brewing Company are standouts.

I used to drink a lot of beer, and tried everything I could. A trip to Trader Joes back in the 80's would result in a refridge filled with stuff nobody's heard of. Spent time trying everything I could find in Europe for a few years too. That was before the explosion in "Craft" beers. Now I have a pretty good idea of what I like and I leave most of the other stuff alone. Go forth and enjoy...

I'm a big fan of craft brews. Just had a few Dogfish Head 60 Minute IPA's last night. I try to stick to WI craft breweries but it's hard when their are so many other great breweries from other states. Wisconsin has an abundance of great craft breweries.

Hi guys I'm a new member here .I actually work at a craft brew supply warehouse. We sell to brewery's like dog fish. Hops barley yeast grain bottles growlers all that .Business is good craft beer is popular these days.We also sell home brew kits I have got to try one ,it just takes time and between work and my other hobbies I don't know if I'll have it.Anyway just saw the thread and wanted to say hello.

Founders, Bell's, Shorts, Dragonmead, Jolly Pumpkin, Arcadia, Darkhorse (had my darkhorse hoodie on yesterday), New Holland, etc. There's lots of them! Is Grand Rapids still 'Beer City USA?'

I have a couple local ones that I frequent, too. 51 North is 5 minutes to my west, and Rochester Mills Beer co is 12 minutes south. Haha.

That is awesome! Last time I counted, Louisiana only has 26 established craft breweries. Grand Rapids has half as many in just one city! lol

Louisiana finally hopped on the craft beer train and started the Louisiana brewery trail as a way to promote the local breweries.

http://breweries.louisianatravel.com/

There was even a promotion through Untappd, called Bayou Brews and Swamp Hops. You could show your check-in badge to the brewery owners/workers and they would give you a goodie bag with a Brewery Trail Pint Glass.

Awesome! The festivals are always a lot of fun, but there are so many breweries around here I couldn't even name half of them, lol.

The newest thing are 'beer halls' and 'taprooms'. Hopcat out of Grand Rapids now has a location in East Lansing (Michigan State University), and in Detroit. 100 taps at the one in EL.

This place (Rochester Tap Room) opened two weeks ago and is 5 minutes from where I live. 60 taps.

I want to take a tour this summer If I can. The scenery is beautiful, and there's a lot of beer to be drank!
I know this photo is incomplete, too.

That's really exciting that It's spreading in LA!

Sounds good to me!

One of my favorite bars ever is in Detroit. Foran's Grand Trunk Pub. It was where they sold Grand Trunk tickets, 100 years ago.

All their beer, food, etc. is locally sourced. It's become a landmark, though I was there the 2nd day it was opened roughly 8 years ago.

Some friends and I went to a beer tapping at Detroit Beer Co in '11. I forgot all about this stuff, lol.

Gotta include my favorite summer-time stuff, Mexican beers. Though this is the worst crap I've ever had. If you see this stuff, buy it and smash it so the world doesn't have to drink it…

Very cool, brother! I've been known to enjoy Mexican beer too. The local Mexican restaurant was out of the local craft beer, so I settled for a Negra Modelo.

From Imperial in Ferndale. Which is a block from the WAB - Woodward Avenue Brewery. I have pics somewhere from that place, as well as the Royal Oak Brewery down the road.

Good to know, that took effing forever! :D

Yes living in Grand Rapids is a craft beer drinkers dream. Bells, New holland, and founders are the best around.

^^ Short's Huma-lupa-licious, Darkhorse Crooked tree, Founders All Day IPA, Norm's Raggedy-Ass IPA, Bell's HopSlam and Two Hearted. (!!!) I'm an IPA guy, and those are the best!
