Well I wasn't going to get this grinder because I'm most likely getting the Grizzly 2x72, but they just put it on sale for $99.88!!! Thats $40 off normal price!

Looks like I'm heading to sears too! Just wanted to give a heads up on price!

I actually just found out they're on closeout. So, you can order them in the store and online both. If you order online I have an offer code you can use for an extra $5 off.

Sweet, just ordered mine for store pick up. $100.57 tax and all. I can use that $48 saved to buy belts and other tool goodies!!

Thanks for the heads up. $99.62 with tax! 18 cents less than the sale price delivered to me. 'PReciate it.

Anytime, I like to keep people up to date on good deals!

BTW, Harbor Freight has their 12spd benchtop drill press on sale from $149 down to $99 as well. I'm going there tomorrow to see if a 20% coupon can be added as well. :D

On closeout huh? So I'm guessing they're not making them anymore? Shame I actually don't mind mine as much as some people do. Just make sure you guys modify the platen before you grind on it.

How much grinding improvement would this be over a 4x36?

The short answer is, a BIG improvement. Go for it.

Longer answer... it's easier to work with. Especially if you remove the guards for quick belt changes. The other fellows are right, you will want to put a better platen on it. Heck, a person could almost justify buying two if you have the budget and bench space for them.

The drawbacks are: it's got one speed, FAST. I wouldn't recommend it for higher grits or shaping handles very much past the most basic shape. The selection of belts isn't very extensive and the Craftsman ones wear out very quickly. TruGrit has better ones that are worth looking into and can be had in higher grits, up to 600 IIRC. About the same price as the hardware store ones, and probably actually cheaper if they last longer. Which I bet they do.

Close out means they are either a) removing it from stock completely OR b) revamping the model for a new release. Let's hope it is the latter, that seems like a very capable machine.

I got a chance to try one with a ceramic platen and a Gator belt on it and it was WAY WAY better than my crappy little HF 1x30. It's no KMG, but for a C note, I think it'll do for a while.
