I have a 2x42 craftsman sander/grinder. I recently ordered a ceramic plate that I can jb weld to the original platen. Does anybody know where I can get another original platen to grind out the shape of the knife. According to my reading if you use the ceramic one to grind out the knife shape you will wear out the platen. I have checked the local Sears and their website with no luck. Maybe a third party platen will fit?

Just grind it up. I put a cheap piece of ceramic tile from HD on mine with BJ Weld and I profile and grind bevels and I have been cranking away for over a year on it and it is still in good shape. Get some 36 grit belts for profiling and it goes much quicker and keep fresh belts in play.

IG stuck one on my craftsman a while back and it's still good as new. I wouldn't sweat it.

Good luck
Nathan

That new platen will make a big difference on your 2X42, it made a big difference on mine!

That's what I am hoping for. the plunges on
my first few knives were really bad.

The ceramic won't wear out that fast and you will spend more time changing back and forth than its worth. One word of warning. Be careful of striking the ceramic platen, or slamming your tool rest into it. It will crack and you will be pissed at yourself, guess how I know this.

Yeah, I bought a sears platen with no problem.

Look in the manual that came with your grinder; it has an exploded parts diagram with part numbers. Take that number and do as Lon Aguiar says.

If you threw out your manual, PM me and I'll look up the part number.
