Hey guys, sorry for more questions. What size ceramic platin should I order, 2x9?

Also, can one sharpen a blade with the high speed of the craftsman? If so with what belt?

Thanks much

If you're getting it from USA Knifemakers Supply it looks like that is the only size he has left. I ordered one that was 8" long for mine and it's still too long you're going to have to cut it. I did mine on a wet tile saw. I haven't gotten to the point of sharpening a blade on mine yet but maybe someone else can chime in. I don't see why it can't be done however.

I tried sharpening on mine the thing just goes so dang fast. I over heated a couple blades, I've been doing it by hand ever since. This takes along time though.

I just attached my ceramic glass platen on tonight. I've played around with it a bit before that and just used some slight pressure against it but not for sharpening yet. I could be wrong but I would guess that less pressure and dipping it in water after every couple of passes should keep it from getting too hot.

I use a 120 belt to remove material on the edge and get the bevels started then go to the paper wheel sharpening system to finish the edge. Just don't leave the blade hanging to long in the same spot or it will over heat.

I do the same

There's a woodsource near my house that sells the paper wheel system. I may have to run out there soon. My brother has a motor I can have so $50 ain't bad at all for that kind of sharp. I've been getting a slight edge with 120 then finishing by hand with a wet stone. It does take some time.

I NEED to get my craftsman going first though. I need a ceramic platin and some good belts. The ceramic platin does kind of freak me out though, I'ld hate to send broken glass flying all over the shop. Anyone have any problems with this?

Then the bubble jig and some steel. I've been flat grinding old files. Turned out some nice knives but I really want to take it up a notch and refine my ability to make the blades I see in my head and have on paper.

Hey thanks again for all the help guys!

I have had mine on for more than a year and it is still stuck on there today as it was on day one. Good luck and post pics!

I only had to replace my first one when I nosed a blade into a belt and the butt of the blade promptly flipped around and shattered it. The JB Weld still held all the fragments to the grinder, so cleanup just involved scraping the whole mess into a garbage can. I JB Welded another one on shortly thereafter.

What length should the platin liner be? Should the liner cover the entire length of the platin? Thanks again guys

I cut mine to 7.25" it doesn't cover the whole platen. I think the platen on the 2x42 measures somewhere around 2.75". I also put 2 screws at the bottom of the glass for it to sit on should it come loose. The theory is that is may hold it in place long enough for you to notice it came unglued.
