Craftsman "bracket" and mods?

I just got a Craftsman 2x42. There's a small metal bracket that is below the work rest, in front of the drive wheel. Is there any reason this bracket could not be safely omitted? It gets in the way of quick changes of the belt.

Will mod the platen pretty soon. Any other mods recommended?

You can junk that bracket and the outside door on the belt housing. Also add a ceramic platin liner and your good to go.

I removed everything I could that got in the way of changing belts, and that was a few pieces as I recall. Perhaps more 'dangerous' technically, but no less so than other industrial type grinders with no protective crap at all around the belt.

I did however leave all the stuff on the disc side, and that's a real exercise in patience trying to change the disc abrasive.
