I have been buying "vintage" tools at thrift shops and EBAY for Trent Rock's $25 Dollar Knife Shop

What is this hammer designed for?
It has a "slot" on one end
I'm thinking it's for bending sheet metal?
I don't think it's for removing nails because the slot is pretty narrow
I don't think it's an upholstery hammer because the ends are not magnetic
I looked on Ebay and Craftsman dot COM and found nothing like it....

Thanks all
I have started out by installing handles/scales on "blanks" (pre-made and old ones that had F'd up handles) and want to move on to more complex stuff in the future
I got the Tim McCreight book and I really like it
My Goddard book should be here any day now

Your right Howie
I found a couple on Ebay
Thanks
So the back part is that way to lighten it up???
It not used to remove tacks?
The slit is not used for anything??
I guess I did ok for .99 cents and McCreight even suggests it as a cheap substitute for a ball peen hammer=====>

(kinda pissed I just paid 10 bucks and the book is online for FREE!!!..although they do take out pages each chapter)

Yes that is an upholstery hammer and it used for tacks. My one uncle did upholstery and he had a couple. I can remember as kids, my cousins and I getting yelled at for messing with them. The split end should indeed be magnetic unless some kid beat on something with it! It picks up the tack and a light blow starts it then you flip the hammer and drive the tack home.

Yup
You guys we're right
It is magnetic
Very weak though
Maybe if I get bored one night I will "remagnetize" it
