So I was in Sears the other day and I saw this item. I was wondering if it is worth picking up to sharpen some knives. Yes, I could spend more money on a better sharpening set up, but for now, I don't want to spend a lot of money.

Also, if not this, can someone please recommend me one that I could pick up and won't break my wallet?

I shelled out for an Edge Pro Apex this last week, spent the last 2 nights sharpening every knife in sight... i thought my knives were sharp before... now my knives all will pop hair just by pushing against the hair, better than shaving sharp =P A good sharpening system is truly worth the money

My intensions were to buy a grinder, and then replace the wheels with paper wheels for sharpening. I guess I should have mentioned that before.

Never tried paper wheels but from what I have read they are dangerous.

Edited to add: The homemade cardboard wheels were what I read was dangerous.

some folks swear by paper wheel sharpening, when the straightrazor folks endorse it I might begin to take it seriously, currently I think it's a good way for a couple guys on the forums to make money selling wheels, the DMT diamond stones and some of the natural stones are the way to go. I use DMTs exclusively now, I used to sharpen professionally with them

Damnit, now EVERYONE will have super-sharp knives. I should have never done that demo at the hammerin, haha!

panch0, the store bought paper wheels are not dangerous when used properly. i have used them for the past 17+ years and the only thing that has happened is me or someone getting cut from the knife being sharp. as for making money, i dont make anything from the wheels. they are a good product and i'm letting members know about them. al3xd4gr34t, you cant go wrong with the paper wheels once you learn how to use them properly.

Like I said I never used them before. I guess any method will work as long as you know what you are doing.
