I have been scouring Craigslist for month looking for any kind of usable, affordable grinders better than my HF 1x30. I finally scored today with an older Craftsman 2x42 belt grinder. It's the 1hp model!!! This for a measly 75 bucks!!! :D In the pic he has a 1x42 belt on it. Guy said his Dad made knives as a hobby before he passed away. I had been saving my pennies for a new model, but now I don't need to! :triumphant: Meeting the guy tonight to do the transaction.

Here's the picture from the ad:

That should help you a lot.

Take a look at the motor plate and see what the current draw is, as well as any other ratings. Many of those combo-units are "rated HP" and are a bit exaggerated. 745 watts is one HP, which is 6.5 amps at 115VAC - IN THEORY. On an average motor running on 115VAC, the actual current would be a draw of 9 to 13 amps ( 70% to 50% efficiency). No motor actually draws the 6.5 amps derived by formula.

If you message me your address I will send you some belts and a piece of pyro ceram for the platen.

Congrats man. I told you that you shoulda left that 1 x 30 at the house last weekend lol

Can't do PMs, don't feel comfy leaving home address on your visitor messages. Email me, though, because I'd love to have them, I'll pay shipping too.

Yeah, I could've. Need to hang onto it for a bit longer till I can get a good selection of belts going though.

I know, I'm just messing with you brother. I'm glad you found one, I expect to see big things coming out of your shop soon. Excellent score for $75, have fun with it.

Stacy,

I checked mine over the weekend. The label reads 8.0 Amps, so just under the 9-13 amps you describe. Regardless, still a step up from a 1x30.

Just got it home. That thing is built like a tank and weighs a ton. It's a 1hp (max developed) and 8 amps. Now I just need to save my pennies for some belts.

I want to thank Shaw Blades for sending me some of his belts that he had collecting dust, along with a ceramic platen.

Got to looking at the machine, there's no platen!! Just a screw hole and a flat space where one should be. Any ideas?

Bend a piece of mild steel 90*, drill a hole, and attach the pyro-ceram platen that Shaw is sending me? Anything else I can do instead?

Use a piece of angle iron. Simple fix

Didn't even think about that. LoL. Thanks, sometimes I can't see the forest for the trees. I need to remember to KISS it.

Man I am going to help you out. I'm emailing you a pdf of the owner's manual for that specific model. In the back it has the typical Sears parts diagram/part numbers where you can order replacement parts. The part number you need is 3AB08701 2" belt platen. Double check me before you order it but that should be it.
