Crappy Knives That Your Co-Workers Carry (or Multi Tools)

At my job mostly everybody carries a knife or multi tool, I noticed they carry some really sh1tty/poor excuses of cutlery. One time one of the guys had a knife with the screws missing from the handle and he was using it with the handle all loose and the blade was dull as a butter knife.

I also noticed that a couple of the managers carry a multi tool on their belt every day. One guy has an Ozark Trail MT and the top manager carries a Winchester MT, LOL he makes the big money and doesn’t even have a Leatherman. I’m sure he never uses the Winchester for anything because it would be broken by now. Another funny thing is the guy with the Ozark Trail MT didn’t even know that it has a screwdriver on it.

I’m not even going to waste my time explaining to these co-workers that they could get much better knives and multi tools.

We may not consider this stuff good but they're using it and it's working well enough for them not to know it isn't very good.
Try to strike up a conversation with one of them about knives one day, if they have any interest in them other than a mere cutting tool offer one an old beater knife you no longer use.
This just may get them hooked.

the 2 guys that carry the multi tools never use them , they just stand around all day and make sure everybody gets the work done on time, they only carry the MT on their belt to show off that they carry a multi tool, I’ve never seen them use their MT to fix anything.

In my maintenance department, only me and my boss carry knives. Nobody else carries one. Boss has a small Victorinox SAK (I think a Spartan or something comparable). I don't like ragging on people when it comes to that stuff, they either lack interest or knowledge, if it's the latter, I prefer to be diplomatic about it, point out things I might like, and then educate/make suggestions for something better if they feel like upgrading a bit. If they lack interest in the topic, no need to bash them either, since they'd only try and turn it around and argue I'm stupid for spending XXX dollar on a knife.

Well then it doesn't matter what it is because it's not getting used.

Now maybe you should inform them that those who know a thing or two buy Leatherman, that a cheapo multitool on your belt makes you look bad.
Ask them " why is it that our supervisors carry inferior tools to those they supervise " tell them
" A supervisor should set an example "
I'll bet that might get them to get something better:D

Btw too many people carry " garbage " , it's best to ignore it because it's only making them look bad in the eyes of those who know something.
It's not really effecting you, and paying too much attention to the " garbage " surrounding you can give you a headache, I learned that years ago.

One of the guys on my crew carried some terrible shark tooth serrated dewalt knife most of the year, I useually have a Mora on by pouch while at work and eventually he texted me a picture of his new "work knife" he picked up a Mora and Bass Pro... im slowly converting him.

I've a basic rule for such. Never insult or criticize anyone elses knife. It just makes people dislike you and probably does nothing to enhance their understanding or appreciation of knives. May just make enemies. Besides it is just not polite IMHO.

That’s the reason I never said anything to them about their choice of tools, plus I really don’t feel like wasting time talking and recommending knives to them.

Well you think that's bad . . .
Think ex Marine . . . never carries a pocket kinfe or any other knife . . .o_Osaaaaaywhaaaaa:confused: ?
Almost as bad . . . regularly I look over and seeing 'em (not him/someone else) using a pair of scissors folded all the way open and used as a knife . . . er. . . . . . . i guess ? ? ?

Commenting on another person's knife is like commenting on theory taste in music. It is rarely helpful and may cause hard feelings.

Yup
Long time ago I finally talked a young lady into getting a knife of her own so she didn't ask us to cut stuff for her, she worked up front and we'er in the back.
She finally bought some kind of SAK wannabe.
I felt it would be out of place to buy / give her a gift.
Wasn't too long she was asking us to cut stuff for her again; I didn't ask what ever happened to the knife she bought.

PS : wasn't like she used it as an excuse to wonder through the back and visit when it was slow she did that all the time anyway . . . when she was busy and had work to occupy her was when she needed stuff cut and was a waste of time to walk the length of the building for it.

I recommend a Spyderco Tenacious or a Buck 110 if anyone asks me about a good and fairly inexpensive folder. A Buck 119 for a fixed and a Leatherman Rev, Sidekick or Wingman for a multitool. All in the $30-50 range and rock solid IME.

If they don’t ask though, I don’t recommend.

I would never make fun of a coworker or friend’s knife. I might ask if I can sharpen it for them if it is insanely dull, but that’s it.

I have had very good friends with absolute garbage knives that I have confiscated after saying “you aren’t using this dangerous piece of $h!t” and gave them a Byrd Cara Cara or similar, but that is super rare (maybe 2x ever).

I'm with you. What others carry simply isn't my concern or my business. I don't care.

I don't comment on them needing to wear a better watch, own a nicer gun, wear nicer shirts, drink better whiskey or smoke nicer cigars. ALL of those things are important to me but I realize not so much to others. IF they ask, I will tell them my opinion, but represent it as only that. I have enough going on in my life to worry about others conforming to my opinions. (BTW, not real big on talking politics, either...)

I have given away several knives I have lost interest in and bought several kitchen knives for friends as Christmas/birthday gifts. For the most part, they appreciate a good knife, and I hit the same sweet spot you do. I have given a new RAT1 as a gift and it became one of my buddie's favorite knife and he prizes it is the guys here would a Sebenza. He would NEVER spend $35 bucks on a knife and his earnings and current home health situation will probably most likely keep that the case. I gave another friend of mine my Tenacious (still had original box, only carried a couple of times, sharp as hell) and he thinks it is so great he won't carry it except on rare occasions. Kinda backfired on that one. I have encouraged him to use the hell out of it but he told me that it is the nicest knife (think about it... a Tenacious) that he has ever owned and doesn't want anything to happen to it.

One man's ceiling is another man's floor. I assume that people carry what they want. I like to be left alone and assume most other people do, too.

Brother from another mother. :D

I drive a 8 year old F150 but have 3 humidors stuffed with the best Cuban and Dominican cigars available, have owned lots of expensive watches including Rolexes (love my Apple Watch and Omega Seamaster now) and love my good scotch and bourbon (and Bordeaux). Might be strange for some to see someone like me me get out of my rusting redneck truck in a Zegna suit and Prada shoes, but that’s just me.

I have a good friend that dropped well over $100k on a Porsche and about the same for his wife’s Tesla and they are both amazing cars. Just not my thing. Same with the drone people, watch collectors, etc. People may spend a fortune on one hobby that we think is absolutely nutty and they think we are mental for spending a few hundred bucks on a knife....

Sounds like the old "Friends don't let friends drive __________."

That's why I bought a Nissan last year.

Nobody at my work any more that I know of. I've given away 4 RAT 1s, a Leatherman Skeletool, a Kershaw Link in S35VN, and a Leatherman Wave to various people I caught using... MTech or Frost knives or god forbid a Paraframe. I carry a spare RAT 1 in my tool bag just in case I spot another co-worker using something unpleasant.

I need to work with you sometime. I have enough crappy knives to get at least one blade a day from you lol :D

Had one kid buy a Benchmade 765 only to carry it for a few months until it got dull and had me sharpen it. Then he started carrying a Gerber assisted folder because he didn't want to dull the 765 anymore. I tried to buy it off him but he doesn't want to sell it..

My boss has and carried a CRKT M16 but I managed to talk him into buying a Spyderco Pacific Salt for his fishing needs.

Another newer guy carries a Mass Drop Ferrum Forge folder.

An older guy who's working on his second retirement has let me talk him into buying a Benchmade Freek and he has some other various cheap folders and a Kizer.

Other than that it's just Gerber and maybe a SOG or CRKT here or there.
