Crappy Knives That Your Co-Workers Carry (or Multi Tools)

Some people at work carry multitools. Most people I see on the street have gas station knives clipped to thier pocket. I was at Ihop and saw a guy with a leek. I bet most people get knives from home depot, Lowes, Walmart, or a sporting goods store. How many non knife guys know about online retailers, or care?

At my job mostly everybody carries a knife or multi tool, I noticed they carry some really sh1tty/poor excuses of cutlery. One time one of the guys had a knife with the screws missing from the handle and he was using it with the handle all loose and the blade was dull as a butter knife.

I also noticed that a couple of the managers carry a multi tool on their belt every day. One guy has an Ozark Trail MT and the top manager carries a Winchester MT, LOL he makes the big money and doesn’t even have a Leatherman. I’m sure he never uses the Winchester for anything because it would be broken by now. Another funny thing is the guy with the Ozark Trail MT didn’t even know that it has a screwdriver on it.

I’m not even going to waste my time explaining to these co-workers that they could get much better knives and multi tools.

I'd agree with Work Truck Man that an Ozark or a Winchester MT probably isn't the first choice for someone who uses their tools everyday but for $14.00 the Winchester is not that bad. I have sold hundreds of them to agencies and organizations that couldn't pony up for a Gerber or Leatherman and they did ok with not a lot of returns and these people used them fairly regularly. The Winchester has a good lineage, being it is actually made by Gerber through the Carolina Knife and Tool Brand. It uses the proprietary Gerber Safe T. Plus system which allows for each tool to be locked in place. Don't get me wrong, it's not the finest craftsmanship out there, but in a pinch, I'd rather have it than nothing at all. At least the managers are trying to look like they know what they are doing......:) Probably more than you wanted to know, but in my new life we can tell those who work by how dirty their boots are.

That’s the reason I never said anything to them about their choice of tools, plus I really don’t feel like wasting time talking and recommending knives to them.

Commenting on another person's knife is like commenting on theory taste in music. It is rarely helpful and may cause hard feelings.

Good points. I always keep a box of affordable and relatively decent clearance folders(like 14c28 kershaws or n690fox’s or gerber multis) in case a coworker breaks and then asks me to reprofile their chinese made pos. If I like them or if they pull their weight I’ll just give them one, or if that would seem offensive just sell them what I paid (about $30). If they resist, I tell them the steel on theirs is “too hard” to reprofile.

Well you think that's bad . . .
Think ex Marine . . . never carries a pocket kinfe or any other knife . . .o_Osaaaaaywhaaaaa:confused: ?
Almost as bad . . . regularly I look over and seeing 'em (not him/someone else) using a pair of scissors folded all the way open and used as a knife . . . er. . . . . . . i guess ? ? ?

Who cares what a dishonorable ex carries? Naw, who’m I to judge!

Unless you mean “former” marine, but like I said, people get discharged as either “ex”or “former” informally, and it only makes a difference if you are “honorably” discharged and someone refers to you as “ex-“. But maybe times have changed in the military Idk.

That's a really great idea and a great way to slowly steer them in the right direction!

Yeah we steel snobs have to contain our contempt for inferior knives to this forum else we get in trouble. People will find the truth easier if we don’t cast shadows. I’ve seen people go from $5 knife or even no-knife carriers at work to spyderco zdp-189 carriers in a year or so!

One of my good work buddies carries a Tac Force. He's thoroughly convinced its a good knife because it has a glass breaker on it. I convinced him to get a Kershaw, and he gave it to his dad.

I have friends getting $5 Mora knives to use at work, whenever they get dull, they sharpen them on a bench grinder. When there's barely anything left of the blade (takes usually like a couple weeks), they just get a new knife.

Everybody I work with carries a piece of garbage knife except for my boss, who lost his knife, so I gave him a Kershaw Thermite I had in my bag. He doesn't really "appreciate" it but he likes it and still uses it as his EDC, which makes me happy for some reason. He's an avid outdoors guy and has filleted fish and gutted deer with it. Not the best knife for the job but it makes me happy he is using it. Another guy I work with uses one of those carabiner multitool pieces of swill and it makes me sick every time he tries to unclip it and open the blade that I pretended to like when he showed it to me. Haha. But all the pieces of swill my coworkers use get the job done. I guess I'm just a knife snob and I love it.

Just because a knife is inexpensive does not mean it is cheap. I have a few knives that are inexpensive but they are very good performers. Also, a lot of people are just not into knives like some of the rest of us are. A little humility goes a long way, folks, and pride is never appreciated.

However, I do cringe when I see someone popping out their ninja blade to show off; butterknife dull, loose blades, and all. The smarter ones will at least get a Case, Buck, or SAK.

I carried mora’s at work as well for a while, they cut miles of plastic before resharpening it seems. Never got one for $5, but I don’t follow exchange rates and commodities enough to take advantage at this price. $9 was cheapest within last several years, unless I missed the deal! The robust and the basic were the ones I used, and still have a stainless companion. That’s funny if the knives are only lasting a few weeks, are they grinding them very enthusiastically?

Believe me, he appreciates it, but can’t show it out of fear you’ll ask for a raise!

Ask him to show you how “tough” the blade is, he’ll break it pretty quick I’m sure!

I've had many jobs and coworkers and no matter the profession most people just don't give much thought to our beloved tool the "knife" until it's time to cut something. Most of those that did carry a knife didn't invest the time or money to purchase something of quality and learn to sharpen it. We my friends are the "exception" rather than the rule.

I'm retired, so no co-workers with knives. The guy that owns the garage where I take my cars knows I like knives, so he pulled out a nice Randall his wife bought him. He went out back and brought out a couple of custom working slip joints one of his mechanics uses. I wonder what he would take in trade for my next visit?

I work in law enforcement and see most of my coworkers carry some crappy unbranded folder with a glass breaker on the end. A lot of Smith and Wesson knives with the department logo too.
