My wife's worst nightmare came true last night when she discovered this arachnid outside our exterior bedroom door. She has a bad case of arachnophobia, and was practically in a panic as her crazy husband was scrambling for his camera like an excited child.

So anyone know there spiders well enough to identify this one?
It seemed like a small tarantula, but for all I know it could be a very large other type of spider.

He got hella pissed at the tupperware tub I scooped him up in. He was even attacking it after he was inside, lol.

can you put a ruler next to it? hard to judge scale..

my dad says it might be a wood spider...

Sorry, it is long gone, these were taken last night. I released him off in the vinyard somewere. From what I remember I would say, as he is sitting, he was about 6" from the ends of the front legs to the ends of the back legs.

That is a big spider! I know if my wife saw that thing she would reach for the shotgun and put a hole in the floor. She absolutely hates spiders too.
IMO It does look like a tarantula.

i hate spiders worse than anything. if i ever saw anything like that near my house i would move.i keep a propane torch nearby just in case.

Dang sometimes i'm glad i live up north.
Snakes i don't mind so much but i really don't like things that have more appendages than me!
I Especially would not want them lurking in the house!
lol!
Thankfully those wouldn't survive up here.
But about 6 months ago someone here found one of your southern spiders in a bag of grapes they had brought home from the supermarket!

Awesome!

Great photos. Hope your wife isn't too rattled.

I love spiders - not that I would want to share a home with that particular fellow(ette?). He / she looks a bit grumpy.

If you had snapped a picture of it crawling across a nice bushcrafter, you would have had a lock on the next "post a picture of your knife and a pet" contest!

All the best,

- Mike

yeah, I'd say its a tararatula too....we used to have them all over our gear in Camp Pendleton...luckily, they don't bother me so i ended up being the designated spider remover for the platoon....i always got a kick out of Marines who weren't afraid to get shot at but freaked at the thought of one of those on their gear.....FYI wash your hands when you are done dealing with them....if they rub their backside with their legs, its their defense mechanism.....those little hairs will irritate your skin and wreak havoc on your eyes if they are exposed....if you don't want to touch them to get them out of the area blow air on the opposite side of their body through a straw, it drives them nuts and they'll leave pronto

Shotgun! Quick! Burn it, send it to hell!!!!

Thats what I was thinking. I hate spiders.

Get a desert wasp, I think they sting and paralize those tarantulas and then lay there eggs inside them so the lil baby wasps can have a fresh meal.

Lol, I'm not scared of spiders, but heeeell NO!

LOL! I don't blame you...I am not seriously agraid of spiders but if I found one of those in my house I would KILL IT!!! KILL IT WITH FIRE!!!

Seriously, I would burn the house down, shoot the neighbors, and call an air strike in on the whole town afterwards. THAT IS TOO BIG FOR THAT MANY LEGS.
