Crazy ebony

This is copied from the info on the latest spade-nose 110 offered in "Limited Editions" on the Buck website.

It offers some insight into the Ebony questions.

"This unique folding hunter features genuine Macassar Ebony that was originally sorted out of the Buck production line in the 1980s due to being "too blond." This vintage ebony was dutifully stored at the home of the Buck Knives Historian for decades until being made into this limited run of 87 beautiful knives."

So......."Blond".........that was once rejected is now being touted as special and desirable.

Go figure. Times change. We've got this stuff laying around, so.......

:D

We were talking awhile back about the new ebony and the blonde streaks you can find and I really like the look of the. But back in the day if it wasn't black it was considered garbage. I guess someone had the forsite and decided to hold onto all the "trash". They probably made a pretty penny off of it now and those LE's turned out nice.

Yep........Buck never used to throw ANYTHING away.

And it paid off many times.

Another reason the old ones seem so black is that they've absorbed a lot of oil over the many years.......and that disguised any blond that might have originally been there.

Also from everything I read and the new partnership with Taylor back in the day if it wasn't black it was considered a bad piece of wood. That's part of the reason that they almost exhausted the supply of that wood. They would cut and cut and cut and if it wasn't black screw it and move on. I seem to remember someone saying that only like 1 in 5 trees are actually black. (Don't know how true) if that's the case that's a huge waste of alot of really nice wood.
