Crazy Guy roaming Utah Wilderness -- Scary Stuff

The way i understand it is that they got his finger prints from the cabin but no match for them on record.. At some point he is going to snap when he comes across someone and kill them..

Does that rifle look a little odd to anyone else?

The barrel appears to have a small diameter tube on top of a large diameter tube, like an air rifle. The stock, bolt and scope look suited to a centerfire rifle, but that barrel just doesn't look right to me.

Not that it matters, but I also think it's very strange that he's outside in the snow and sunshine and not wearing sunglasses.

Looks like an old Remington 600, you can tell by the "dogleg" bolt handle, and that`s a ventilated rib on top of the barrel. One of the best guns Remington ever made, one of these was the basis for Jeff Cooper`s original scout rifle.

Yes, I was wondering about this rifle too, I did a google search and it matches, Remington 600, one freaky lookin rifle, I am into guns and to be honest this is the first one of these that I have ever seen.

Geez Rick your making me feel old brother. I use to sell these models in my gun shop and they were popular for those who could see the value in newer design it offered. It was pretty high tech in its day.

Why did the 600 have the rib?

here is a description from an on-line auction:
Remington model 600 bolt-action rifle. Chambers a .308 cartridge in an 18-1/2" barrel. Barrel has a hard plastic vented rib attached by screws.

Be careful utah bladeforums members !!!!!!!

Utah is basically an insane asylum but after living in both northern and southern California I see it as just a different shade of crazy. And I have no doubt that there are many people like this guy living here, and I would not be shocked to find out that the actions of "this one cabin burglar" is like ten guys who may or may not have even run into each other.

I suppose it could be worse, and I'm pretty sure we'll get there eventually.

Well I am 45 years old and I have been into guns since I could walk and maybe I just did'nt pay attention but I don't remember ever seeing this gun. Maybe it is a regional thing, I was raised in East Tennessee.

45 huh, well then the Remington Mohawk 600 (basically a Gen 2 model) was available during the 70s and the 600 fizzed out about the time you were born. It competed with other highly packable carbines such as the Marlin and Win lever actions which dominated the market. This rifle was in a better cartridge in 308 and the 350 was brutal in it. Just never really caught on. Lever guns were just too in-trenched.

I had one of those rifles in 6mm, it was very, very accurate. The XP 100 pistol used the same action.

I am by no means defending someone who breaks into someone else's property. BUT, remote camps get broken into all the time..Upstate Maine, Alaska, Vermont, New Hampshire....all have the same issues. I doubt its physically possible for this guy to have walked to all these buildings alone..
I suspect many of the cases are simply stupid kids, and other thieves, because of this guys over the top "Mountain Man" thing...they are gonna spin the hell outta him.

i have been following this story and these post... this one IMO is the best and makes the most sense...
i have been thinking the same thing. it just seems odd to me that the said cabins were not all the same as far as vandalism and such... it just dosent make since to me that they are ALL the same guy... sure he may have broken into some of them, but i also believe that once the word got out that 'they' were looking for a certain person, well then all hell could break lose giving any other BOS dirtbag the opportunity do go 'hog wild' because they think its all the same guy...
just food for thought i guess... and yes 'they' want to spin it the best they can for the headlines...

I have a Remington 600 Mohawk in .243 that will shoot 1/2 inch groups with 105 grain bullets handloaded. Heavy bullet but that is what it likes. No rib tho but a short heavy barrel. I hope the weirdo's rifle is not that accurate.

I like his purple snowshoes. Just shows that you really can fashionably accessorize with camo clothing.

I think if I had a cabin in this area, I would make some exlax filled Brownies and leave for this guy to munch on!!!

No, NO, then he would just crap all over your cabin and stuff in an Ex Lax fueled rage!

After reading the story they say the "think" they have seen him twice in 5 years. They are not positive who it is. He has not killed or hurt anyone as far as we know.

I agree with this comment below. It was a comment someone left under the story.

"The M.O's do not match and the 1,000 mile range does not either. The two known human spottings of this guy ended with him retreating to the woods that indicates he is not confrontational.Given the average citizen is about as aware of their surroundings as an ant is aware he is on your shoe this guy has probably stood 20 feet from 100's of people in that wilderness and they never knew it.Without matching physical evidence from the scenes it is at very least negligent to lay the blame for the cabin break ins on any one person. The whole story sounds to me like the government is trying to create a boogie man out of a guy that has decided to walk away from society. They do not like people living free outside of the mass media controls and illegal searches after all he can't be American if he does not register to vote for one of the two corrupt parties right?"

i absolutly agree... i have also thought about the fact that a person that is 'free' is a threat to the establishment... and they do not like it...
and if you will recall, they also had to throw in the ol' 'terroist'... anyone who does not follow their agenda these days is a damn 'terroist'...
terroist, because he has broken into a few cabins... give me a break!

im not condoning theives, i personally hate theives... but, i do know how to 'read between the lines'...

Who's to say all these roberies are commited by the same man. Out in the country it's pretty comon for deserted shacks to get robbed. So far they don't have any real leads aside from a few photos, one taken by a gamecam. I'm not sayins he's not responsible for some of it... none the less, for someone to feel like this guy needs to be caught before being able to return to their retreat, kinda blows:thumbdn:. I'm for the claymore exlac brownies.

yeah, your absolutly right.
not to get off topic here, but if people are 'afraid' to go back to their little 'cabin in the woods' because of one guy running around, they are nothing more than sheep that cant take care of themselves to begin with and do not deserve to be there in the first place. if they expect someone else to take care of them and keep them safe, i find that to be a very sad...
we live year 'round in an off grid cabin in the mountains... if someone were to be running around here doing that sort of thing, they wouldnt last long...
a sherriff, dogs, or search parties would not be needed... the coroner would be called to clean up the mess...!
