Crazy Pala stikes again -- 4/25 steals. Pix & 4 AKs.

I just emailed about the 2nd one from the Top. I will take it if he still has it.Is the handle Bone?? Its the dark handle that he said was from Burma. Is Burma the factory or actual master that made the knife?? Sorry newbie here.WD

Email sent for Kumar's AK. No particular reason for that one since I'm not familiar with the various kamis, but it looks nice. Would settle for any of them though.

Welcome to the cantina, WD.

Bura is the name of the kami (bladesmith) who made the knife. The black handle is made of buffalo horn. There's tons of info available from the FAQ. Just click the link at the bottom of one of Uncle Bill's posts.

And there's tons more info available from the crew here as well. Enjoy your new blade!

Here's a little info on the guys who make these:

Bura's at the top of the page, and then if you scroll to the bottom, there's pics of some of the rest, and their marks.

WarDawg-- Good choice! Let us know how you like it.

Cliff-- Good choice as well. That handle should finish up quite nicely if you are so inclined, or leave as is and enjoy. Hopefully it will be a bit nicer than the Atlanta Cutlery khuk:).

Whew!!!!!!!! Boy that was fast and furious....What does UBBB mean?? Thanks for all the tips and suggestions guys.Im going to have to get me an 15 " WWII or and British service next. I have read most of the FAQ but all of it hasn't set in yet. Im going to have to go back and reread and hope it sticks better. I read about how they are actually made and the process they go threw. I see where yall come up with the saying ( They Have Soul ). Yes they do... Does the bone handle hold up well. I really do like the wood alittle better but the Bura blade spoke to me.I would scroll down to the 3rd blade and the Bura would call me back. She's got a home guys......... Thanks again WarDawg

UBBB means Uncle Bill Best Buy

(Uncle Bill is of course Bill Martino)

Regards,
Bill C.

WarDawg-- the buffalo horn handles are very durable. Not indestructible, mind you-- ya probably don't want to use the handle to pound nails or such. If the horn ever develops cracks, they are easily filled with superglue or epoxy. To prevent cracking in the first place, you can apply a number of lanolin-based products to moisturize the horn. I use some stuff called hooflex that is intended as a horse hoof conditioner. Works great. there are a number of other products out there as well. If the horn is too slippery, you can always hit it with a scotch brite scrubby pad or some 320 grit sandpaper, but you will loose the nice shiny look.

UBBB= Uncle Bill's Best Buy(s)

Horn vs Wood? I have horn. Love them. Others have wood, they love them. As long as you hit things with the metal blade part and NOT the handle, they will last longer than you will.

BUT..many others know more than I. Welcome.

:D
Warning, the impartment of limited knowledge follows:
The handle on the Bura AK above is horn, and will last a long time, although if you live in a dry climate, you'll want to put some Hooflex* (or some other treatment) on it to keep it from cracking. Cracks can also be repaired with superglue.

*easy to find at any equestrian supply store -- I got a small tub of it which is probably a 10-year supply since you don't need much.

Bura ( real name Lal Bahadur Bishwakarma ) is the nickname that means "old man". He is the guy that made the former king's khukuri. The king that died in a family massacre a couple years ago, not the presently ruling king.

Everyone has their favorite kami, but it's generally conceded that Bura is the guy who gets the everyday in and out best marks.

The second place guy was Sanu who every now and then had inspiration that enabled him to occassionally surpass Bura. Sanu's dad runs an arun ( shop ) that turns out the scissors for the Nepali carpet/fabric trade. However, Sanu was the second son. Not the guy in place to inherit. For reasons unknown, he returned to work in his Dad's shop.

Kumar is good, and he showed up and later brought his older brother Sher over. So Kumar's been here longer, and has seniority, but Sher's the elder brother - which meanns the usual dogfights.

Murali is good, but had tuberculosis, and spent a year at home being cured with antibiotics. He came back but is gone once again reason unsure.

For some reason, when you find a kami that turns out khuks ( the ones that talk or connect to you ) that seem magical to you, the chances become higher that other khuks made by them will have that same magical feeling seem to increase. To put the effect in terms of today, it's as if there is an invisible USB or firewire socket in the palm of your had and the khuk has an ivisible plug in the handle.

You pick the thing up and they connect with an electric shock. You name it, you start including it in conversations, you start sleeping with it next to you, when you sit down in front of the computer it sits in your lap... and you begin to understand why warriors of the ages name and speak of their blades as if they were magical. Because they were and still are.
