I need to come up with a temporary centering die to use on a big integral gyuto, but don't have the gear and parts of make one right now. Do you guys thing that if I JB welded some 3/8-1/2 inch thick bars to my big flat dies that they would hold long enough to get one good press?I know the stuff can handle temps in the 400F or so range, but I am wondering how long they would hold before the heat leached up into the bars?

I know I wouldn't try anything that wasn't directly welded in a press. God forbid you don't get a proper press and it kicks out at you with however much force your press can produce.

I took a rod and flattened a side, and welded that to a flat bar and its held for years. Makes good fullers.

Use top tools on your flat dies. It would be worth your while to fab up a saddle holder, which is basically just a ring that clamps around your flat die that has a "hardie" attached. Your top tools are held by the hardie.
This way nothing comes flying at your forehead unexpectedly.

You don't have something to throw a couple of easily ground-off tack welds on each bar piece?
I don't think anything would come flying out at you even if yer JB weld failed though (don't think it would on the first press).

My lcheap little welder no longer welds. Like I said, don't now the proper tools.
