Crazy to actually use an $800 knife?

I'm not a rich guy but I do on occasion splurge on a treasure. I've been hit with the Chris Reeve bug lately.

I EDC an Inkosi. I currently also own a Mnandi / Damascus in Box Elder. It mostly sits in a display case.

Well, I just picked up a Sebenza 21 / Raindrop Damascus with Mammoth Ivory. Its being shipped as we speak.

Would I be crazy to actually EDC it intermittently or is it just too expensive a knife to get scratched up in my pocket?

I guess that depends on you. Did you buy it as an investment, piece of art, or something you will enjoy being with you. If you bought it for the joy of carrying it, then you should carry it around. If its art put it on display, and if it was for investment lock it in a safe.

If I had just bought your Sebenza I would want to carry it around. I think I would protect is as I could but I would want to feel the ivory and see the damascus. I would expect I would not use it for more then opening letters though. Any of the three options has pros and cons.

Carry it in the leather pouch, that'll spare it from most 'pocket wash'.

BTW, I carry a damascus UG Classic with a diamond inlayed in it most every day.

Nah, its not an investment. Its simply something I loved. I'd love to carry it around but I cant imagine actually using something so expensive as a tool that takes wear.

Is it crazy to drive your $150,000 Ferrari? Almost any CRK is replaceable, or can be refinished......use the knife and give it no thought. It's still cheaper than most second-hand cars.

Rotate it as an EDC for carry on "nice" days. Best of both worlds.

I do this with my watches. Some are higher-end; they get worn on days where no damage will likely come to them.
Some are beaters; they get worn for camping, yardwork, carwork, etc.
Some are nicer, but it wouldn't kill me if they got beat up a little; those get worn on the days where damage is not likely but possible.

Just depends the reason you bought it for. I have some guitars that definitely cost more than a CRK, and they have plenty of love marks on them. Each one has a story. If it's more an art piece you want to fondle occasionally and cut paper and appreciate the quality, then by all means do. Or just throw caution to the wind and say YOLO as the kids call it, put it in pocket and ride on. With all nice things of mine, I always find the first scratch the toughest to get over. Then it gets another and suddenly I'm fine with it because it adds character IMO. I'm not sure though if a mammoth/Damascus would be one I'd personally want to ever get that first scratch, but that's just me.

If it were mine, I would carry it in low impact situations, dress knife, special occasions and light use. The only thing I ever worried about was hard impact to the scales. I often bump into things at about pocket level(or often enough), so I never carried mine during my daily work routine, but would not hesitate if I were going out-rotation permitting. Nothing wrong with being a collector, but personally I get more enjoyment from carrying them.

It's crazy to buy a knife and not use it :) Using a knife is half the fun of ownership.

I was also in your shoes a couple of months ago. Now, I carry between 2 or 3 CRKs daily. One I need for every day cutting tasks and the other as a light user. The 3rd one is carried for total admiration. :D

Crazy not to...

Depends of the knife...

Lol I like your philosophy [emoji106]

Wait until you get it in hand before you make any decision.
Sometimes they have to be carried/used gently just to have the satisification of owning and using an expensive knife.
No doubt, you'll make the right decision about the CRK.

The decision is entirely dependent upon you mate. I have lots of blades worth $800 and over that I use, happily. I have a philosophy that sees me refuse to buy a knife that I would not use. That does not mean I get around to doing so, as I have more knives than I could use in 10 lifetimes. But I don't buy any (though I got a favorable trade into one) that are so pretty use would be a shame. Such decisions are always that of the owner.

Use them. They are tools. The beauty is in their function and utility. Take a picture of it and then abandon the investment mentality. Think twice, cut once. It will last longer than you.

Looks like the majority of folks suggest it be carried and used. But what seems right to me may not be good advice for you . . . just like Andy the Aussie says. If you would be in a panic all the time about hurting it then I wouldn't carry it. This is rightfully your call and no matter what anyone else says . . . it has to feel right to you.

Me?? I would carry and use it.

I would not use it but I would carry on special occasions etc.
I would have something else like a Vic cadet to use on those days.
