My girlfriend carries 3 knives with her.
Crazy
One of those is a Mora (looks like a thicker than usual paring knife to me).
I told her and anyone else who will listen all you need for a blade is as long as your pointer finer +/- 1/2".
No idea why anyone would carry more than 1 knife.
Not to start WW4 but when she told me her sisters and 2 brother in laws did the same my diagnosis is CRAZYITIS.
Versatility. No one blade profile is "ideal" for all knife tasks.
The standard Stockman pattern, for example, gives three useful blades for different tasks;
Clip point for general purpose use. Sheepsfoot for precision cuts, "Spey" blade for its named purpose, plus unzipping a game critter's gut without worry of slicing into the intestines and ruining some of the yummy meat, and is also good for budding and grafting use in the garden or orchard.
The earlier "Cattle Knife" generally has a spear point primary, and a pen blade rather than the more versatile "Spey" blade, or a punch.
Aside from the "Muskrat" pattern with two clip points, the Canoe, and Sunfish, both with two spear points, (
in my opinion a "pen" blade is just a mini spear point, suitable for the same tasks.) most multi blade knives have different blade profiles.
The Trapper's and Moose's full length "Spey" blade is also good for spreading PB and jam, as well as slicing summer sausage.
A two blade Folding Hunter gives a full size clip point and drop point blade. Quite handy for peeling, field dressing, and butchering game critters. With proper technique, it is also great for felling saplings to construct a shelter.
A blade with a lot of belly is good for peeling critters. A Wharncliffe, Sheepsfoot, Lamb foot, and Ramsfoot could be used to peela critter, but there is a very high chance of puncturing the hide. (very bad if you're going to tan the hide and use for clothing, footwear, or shelter. (Until the "white man" introduced cloth to the plains indians, they used buffalo and other leather on the outside of their plains lodge/teepee.)
I don't "think" carrying more than one is "crazy".
Then again, I normally carry three multi blade knives, plus at least one 3 or 4 layer SAK or a 4 blade scout/camp/utility/"Demo" knife.
I Have since 1960.
I also habitally carry at least three fountain pens, with different colored inks.
