I've seen in the past pimping contests that only judged the quality of the pimp, and maybe a little for creativity, but never one that really focused on how creative someone could get with a knife. Of course, we'd have to get enough participants, put I think something like that would be pretty cool. I think we should stick with amateur pimpers also. The contest could be based upon: 1) creativity 2) functionality (can't get too carried away, the knife has to work) 3) professionalism. Also, we'd have to decide what knife we'd want to use to pimp, so that we'd all be starting equally.
I could throw in an inexpensive knife for a prize, but I'm not really in much of a position to do so, so maybe I could get some help here. Maybe we could do something really fun and have every contestant throw in a cheap prize, winner take all, value somewhere around $10-15, and use DVDs or maybe CD, or maybe book or misc. knife junk. Just a crazy idea.
What do you guys think?

I LOVE THE IDEA! We'll all order the same knife.
(I vote for Spyderco Manix.)

We COULD have the prize be that everyone has to send their non-winning pimp knives to the winner. But what would somebody do with 10 or 20 of the same knife?

I like the $10-$15 prize from every contestant.

Is there any limit to how much we can spend ON the pimp job? Can we "send it out" to have it, say, coated or something?

We should start out with a good knife like the Manix or something because I don't want to work my butt off on a knife that I won't want when I'm done with it because people don't want to spend $100 on a base knife to pimp.

1) I think all work should be done by the individual. If you want to blue the blade or gun-kote it at home (not sure how possible this is), then I think that would be okay. Otherwise, we're defeating the purpose by sending it out. As far as cost goes, heck I don't care, if you want to diamond-inlay your handle, go for it!
2) I think we should start with a less expensive knife, unless we get enough people willing to spend that kind of money on a knife like that. Personally, I'd prefer something less expensive, just because if I screw it up, I can always get another one, or extra parts cheap.
.
How many people should we set a minimum to run this contest? 5?
What kind of time limit should we set. I'd like to have a running time of maybe 4-8 weeks.

i might be interested but i dont know if you ll let me play
while im no pro i do like to "try" to make knives and do have some power tools
if it makes and difference to you i have sold just one knife
butch

Hey, if you want to make this fun and fair, just do it like a KITH. Take names, select and inexpensive model, have everyone do thier mods and post pictures. Have some sort of prize or something,b ut at the end, randomly pair names on the list and have the two members exchange. Id love to pimp out a knife having done a number of kits prior to going sole authorship. Perhaps we can all just do a kit or something like that.

I would love to join this but , I have some concerns.
First , it has to be a knife that can be completly dismantled and put back together with relative ease.
Second I do not think it should be expensive , 20-50$ is good , you got to remember Christmas is coming up and some folks dont have excess cash sitting around (like me).
CRKT comes to mind , good knife and many are completely "take apartable".
Third , if nobody wants to pimp the same knife , there should be a rule that it has to cost less than 50$ or whatever , this way someone with cash fallin out his butt doesnt buy a Sebenza and win on that fact alone.

I'll keep an eye on this thread.

Edit** actually tiktoks idea rocks. The cheaper Darrel Ralph kits are under 20$ and the end result is a decent knife for the price.
You can always give the knife as a gift to a family member or friend if you choose not to keep it.
Like I said Christmas is very near and most of us I would think do not have spare cash comin out our whazoo.

We can wait until Jan or Feb., if that is the consensus.

Jan or Feb is better.
If we're going to do a kit I wanna get one of those Mikov Auto Kits.

.

Jan or Feb is better.

fine by me :)

So if the interested parties agree , do we settle on one type of kit or it doesnt matter as long as it's a kit or different classes of kits.. etc.??

:)

Can anyone post some kit options?
I once saw a Mikov Auto kit, but I'd have to hunt for them again.
We're assuming it'll be a folder, right?

.

I think it shoudl be the same kit if its going to be a contest.

Folder or fixed blade?

I think a DDR3 gives about as much canvas as anyone would want.

Sorry if i wasn't clear earlier. A KITH is a knife-in-the-hat. Makers on these forums from time to time have them with a themse such as "scavenger KITH", in which all the components for the knife must be scavenged from trash, nothing purchased. At the end of the period, the participants names are randomly paired, and each sends the other his/her knife.

We could do a "kit" KITH like this, or have a fun silent auction for them....or just keep em! The kits may offer a better canvas to customize on, since they are really designed that way.

Sounds like fun! We should obviously order as a group since you get a 25$ discount ordering 5 or more....Darrel posts here so maybe we can contact him and work something out....

Examples: (you may have seen these before, I whore out them whenever kits come up!)

These are stock kits from www.knifekits.com

I don't think they need to be drill and tapped, well, maybe the scales, but you can always just epoxy, I think. I've seen diagrams out there for these, It would be a real easy thing to do just to call one of the sellers of these things. Almost all knifemaking supplier sell these kits. also, I think. www.knifekits.com might be a good place to get them.
TikTok, with all due respect, we can use you as a judge, perhaps, but you're too qualified to participate in this amateurish contest. The only pimpin' I've ever done is use a little sandpaper, but I'm up for a challenge, and I have no mechanical skills at all!

Full of lead, I think most of us would like to stay from autos for legal reasons. One option might be to get the button locking kit, which I think is auto convertable.

Nothing like that will happen. My initial intention is to rate this contest First and Foremost on creativity, then functionality and fit and finish. I really think we're better off basing this contest on creativity to push ourselves to get a little crazy.

If we keep it in the $20-$50 range, I'm totally in. Something with a theme, even cooler. Sign me up!

I just ment, if we weren't all going to do the same knife, I might get an auto.
