Has anyone used one of these Crescent Knife Works vises? If so what do you think of them?

I use my drill Press for doing that. I also can drill my holes in for my handles.

This thing looks like it hold a knife at almost any angle and rotate 360 deg. I think it would be good for doing filework and even some profiling with a dremel and sanding drums?

That looks cool, I've been using a "Moran" style vise I got from Uncle Al's a few years ago. It works great and I wouldn't want to be without it. That said that looks like an improvement over mine, basicly the same principle, just a little heavier/better built. Also mine has steel pads, got to make sure the blade is well taped and padded, though the swivel helps hold the wedge shape. If the price is resonable I'd say go for it.

Forgot to add, mine just has a piece of flat bar welded to it for a base, you clamp it in a vise and ajust it up or down from there. I think I'd prefer that to mounting to the bench top.

It looked good enough for me I guess, I just ordered one. I'll post information about it when it arrives.

Thanks

Their really nice but just way too expensive for what it is. It is all tig welded and professionally done but you can get a vise same style for 1/4 the price. Someone sells the exact same style on ebay for $50 unfinished. I purchased one about two years ago and it works flawless. I too wanted that vise but used the money I saved on a lot of other supplies.

I made my own, for about 20 bucks in materials. Not as pretty as the other ones, but seems to get 'er done. Round peg in a square hole, hinged wood jaws lined with glued on scrap leather left over from sheaths. :D

Heres a couple other pics with it opened up. This discount steel place charges more for cuts than material so it was cheaper to buy the bigger pieces and cut them my self at home, and so I actually had extra material and I gave this one to Simon (Siguy).

I guess I have more money than time and I have no welding skills or welder. So I decided to get it. Thanks for the input.

I've got one of those too. Used it on every knife I've made for the last few years. First thing I did was glue some leather over the steel pads to cushion them. Of course I still tape the blade to prevent scratches, but not to pad it.

I have a fileworking vises setup in the shop. I think I have a photo of it on my website in the shop tour. But that one you are getting may be ok for what you are planning to use it for. So, good luck and have a great day.
