"Crimson" Mini Griptilian at REI

So, I broke down and went to REI and got the crimson mini Grip with satin the blade. I plan to get another one sometime, probably the Ritter and swap blades. This is my first Griptilian and only my second Benchmade and the blade is slightly off center (my other is a 530 and it is fine). I didn't think to inspect it until I'd got in the car so I went back in and asked if I could swap for another. They went back and looked and only had one other. I looked at it and it was slightly better so I took it reluctantly.

I'm just wondering how your crimson was JNewell or anyone else for that matter with a Griptilian? Are they generally pretty well centered or is there a little variation?

I think I have about 7 mini grips now, and only one or two have centered blades. Doesnt bother me because none of them rub on anything. Not sure why Benchmade doesnt bother centering the grip blades.

My answer is just about the same as the above on all points. I guess the count is two full size and five small, plus four more my older son has to increase the sample size - many are slightly off center but none rub. Oddly, though some people seem to have luck getting Grips to center by tweaking the assembly process, it hasn't worked too well for me - but it isn't really a problem, either, since as I said, none of the blades rub.

I know I've said this before, but I do like the mini Grips. The liners are about the same size as the full size Grip, but because the knife is smaller they are basically full-liner knives and they feel, sound and balance differently. Oddly, the mini also has four screws securing the liners to the handles (2x/side) where the full size has only 2 (1x/side).

Note on the price...the members 20% sale started either yesterday or today, which takes some of the pain out of MSRP.

something i noticed about the s30v crimsom was that the amgle of the edge is a bit steeper on it than any other benchmade i've seen. usually benhmade has their knives (or their folders anyways) as 60 degrees, but this edge seems a bit steeper and wider as well. has anyone else noticed this? and what the reason for it is?

I happen to own one of these exact knifes, I am sorry to say but there is no plain edge version of the crimson mini grip. You can however use other mini griptilian blades and switch them out with the benchmade tourx screwdriver set. The reason I know this is because i talked to a guy at a very huge collector and performer, and he really kept up to date with this kind of stuff and i checked many other sources also. And im sorry to say that they were a very short run and i was lucky to get one of the last 58 so if you already didnt pick one up, they may as well be gone D:

Just picked up a mini grip 556SBK-1201 from REI (ordered last weekend, received couple days ago)... Nice blade. Indeed S30V. Black hardware, axis knobs, liner and clip (split arrow). Seems to cut amazingly well. Slightly better than a D2 556 I also have.

Oddly - when I go to REI now, it's unavailable.

I know this is an old thread but I thought I'd mention that Roger at Knifeworks.com has a limited number of blacked out 556's with an S30V blade at a great price. I just picked one up and it's just about perfect in every way. I can't wait to start using it.

I just picked up the red Mini-Griptilian in S30V for $30 in the REI Garage sale!!
Are these pretty rare these days?

Go to Benchmade's website, go to their custom shop, select your steel and blade style. You can also get your blade colored if they have that steel in that color. Then you can put any engravings you want on it and color your griptillian handle. OR you can go to a custom seller like knives ship free and I think they have crimson mini grip scales for sale

I did.

Although mine is the D2 version Mini. It too had a noticeably steeper edge. I'd say the steepest out of all the BMs I have. Like a razor edge. Like a Spyderco grind.

Oops, my bad again. Didn't read the date on that reply. Something worth noting.

Old knife combat basic is to never have the thumb dangling. Have a good grip. A hammergrip.

Then there are variations. Jimping is tailored to sabre grip, which is only 1 angle to cutting. Obviously, not all knives are made for thrusting. Eastern favors slashing. No jimping. Different grip. Different angle.

I forget where I read it, but it was said that jimping want favored on high dexterity knives as it lead the user to keep the thumb in that one spot, which is a no no. Default is to keep the thumb tucked. That's all martial arts though. Don't want broken, removed fingers.

So, I guess jimping goodness would depend both on the knife and the man.
