Hi guys,

I want to have a few blades crinkle coated but I can't find anyone who offers the service. Does anyone have any recommendations?

Thanks guys!

Matt

That might cost you your Flitz endorsement deal:D

One more time...

BB, I don't miss Northwest Ohio one bit. It's just about perfect down here :). I hoped to see you at Blade testing with me. Next year?

Any help on a powder coater would be appreciated. Every company I call gives me the same "boy, that's a new one" response.

Thanks guys!

LR, crinkle coat? are you sure it's not one of those spray on bedliner coatings? I've seen those used for coating on some blades/handle treaments.

I'm looking for a textured epoxy powder coat similar to Busse Combat's finish.

I want tough and low maintenance.

How about good old parkerizing? If that won't work for you, you should start asking some gun guys about the moly or epoxy coatings that are used on firearms. The Brownells web site might be a good place to start

Thanks Joe. I'll try the firearms sites.

If it comes down to it I'm going to brown all the blades ;).

Matt, I dont know of anyone to recommend, but PPG makes powdercoat by the name envirocron. There is a polester/epoxy hybrid in the line PN# PCF90149 that is not crinkle but textured nontheless.

Thanks Joe. I'll try the firearms sites.

I have a Craig Camerer fighter that has a rough gray finish and I asked him how he did it. He told me that he etched it. I think that he bead blasted the entire knife too. Drop him and line and ask him how he does it.

LongRifle if you find out please let me know. I can only find the gun kote and the duracote.

FWIW, Powder coat is generally smooth from what I've seen.

For a crinkle coat try a auto supply store. I remember there was a product for under hood components that produced a crinkle coating.

All it required was some surface prep and an oven.

Hope this helps

Crinkle coats in the auto industry are done with saran wrap, at least on low riders. A few years ago guys were sraying chameleon paint on taped off pinstripe sections and then applying scrunched up saran wrap to the paint while it was still wet. This gave a swirly random pattern to the paint. You could try the same thing with powder coat before baking it. Dont know if it would work the same but it should inpart a texture onto the powder coat at the very least. May be worth trying out.

Crinkle coat epoxy paint was kind of popular on typewriters and radio stuff in the 40's and computer mainframes and industrial electronic stuff in the 70's. It was an epoxy paint that was heated in an oven to cure and get the crinkle.

It's been a few years, but I've seen it occasionally in auto parts catalogs in a spray can. You should be able to find it at an auto parts or biker store. Spray it on and put it in an oven. It's pretty durable if the surface prep is done right.

Matt, try your local Auto parts store or a Automotive Paint supplier.
Other possibilities Hemmings Motor news or JC Whitney
